Phnom Penh welcomes a fresh touch of Irish charm with the grand opening of The Wild Rover, a traditional Irish pub on Street 178, mere steps from some of the capital’s most iconic sites, including the Royal Palace, the National Museum, and the picturesque Preah Sisowath Quay.

This newest addition to Phnom Penh’s bustling social scene is more than a pub—it’s a piece of home for the city’s Irish expats and a hub of warmth and hospitality for travelers from around the globe.

The Wild Rover takes its name from a popular Irish folk song about a young man’s journey home after years of adventure.

For The Wild Rover’s owner, Alan, and its manager, Julie, both originally from County Derry, Ireland, the pub marks a new chapter. After a decade of living in Cambodia and witnessing the closure of beloved Irish establishments, Alan felt inspired to bring an authentic Irish pub back to Phnom Penh.

Opening Weekend Festivities

Kicking things off with a nod to Cambodian tradition, The Wild Rover will host a Pros Prum monk blessing ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024. The festivities continue with a soft opening party at 5 p.m., where guests can enjoy a selection of complimentary food and drinks. As the evening unfolds, Irish musician Dan Reidy will treat attendees to an authentic Irish music set from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., transporting guests straight to the lively pubs of Ireland.

An Irish Haven in the Heart of Cambodia

Irish pubs are synonymous with camaraderie, warmth, and a sense of belonging—no matter where you are in the world. With The Wild Rover now open, it’s currently the only Irish pub in Phnom Penh, offering a slice of Ireland to those passing through the capital as well as to its local expat community. Both Alan and Julie are excited to provide an authentic pub experience with a unique Cambodian twist, creating a friendly space for Irish expats and any visitor seeking English-speaking company and lively conversation.

In the months ahead, The Wild Rover plans to roll out a hearty food menu alongside its extensive drink selection. Classics like the All-Day Irish Breakfast, Irish Stew, and Shepherd’s Pie will soon become fixtures for those looking to indulge in comforting Irish flavors.

A Warm Welcome Awaits

Alan and Julie are eager to see The Wild Rover grow into a community staple, a place where visitors and locals alike can come together, share stories, and experience a touch of Irish warmth amidst the lively, ever-changing cityscape of Phnom Penh. They look forward to welcoming everyone to their cozy corner of Phnom Penh and raising a glass to new friendships and good cheer at The Wild Rover.

Discover Craft: Cambodia’s Hub for Craft Beer, Live Music, and Fun https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/discover-craft-cambodias-hub-for-craft-beer-live-music-and-fun/ Thu, 26 Sep 2024 04:01:29 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=13258

Located just south of the Royal Palace, Craft is a notable hotspot in the popular Palace Lane for both locals and tourists looking for a unique experience. A fusion of craft beer, live music, and finger-lickin’ fun food, Craft offers something unique in the vibrant F&B scene of Phnom Penh. Co-founder Dave shares the journey of how Craft came to life and the passion that keeps it thriving.

“We established Craft during the dying days of COVID,” says Dave, who’s lived in Cambodia for over 16 years. “The idea was simple: combine our three passions—craft beer, live music, and fun food—in a way that keeps people coming back. We’re affordable, we offer something different, and most importantly, we’re fun.”

The concept has grown beyond expectations. From eclectic live performances to collaborations with Cambodia’s best independent brewers, Craft is not just another bar—it’s a community hub. Dave reflects on the path that brought him here: “I spent two years as a volunteer in Battambang and ended up staying 14 more years. Before Craft, I was running a regional consulting company. Now, I focus on bands, social media, and events, and leave the heavy operational stuff to our excellent team.”

Craft’s Core: Affordable Quality and Fresh, Local Offerings

Craft stands out by fusing competitive elements in Phnom Penh’s bustling F&B scene. “Restaurant bars, live music venues, and craft beer are all competitive segments, but we’ve found a way to make them work together,” explains Dave. “We source the best craft beer from Cambodia’s 15 or so independent brewers, and our food is fresh, healthy, and we make it all ourselves.”

One of the key driving forces behind their food ethos is one of Dave’s business partners, who has owned and managed restaurants in various countries. This passion for fresh ingredients and avoiding pre-processed food is what keeps Craft’s menu exciting and consistently delicious.

When it comes to the live music experience, Craft doesn’t hold back. “We’ve had everything from jazz and fusion to classical baroque and rock. We work hard to offer a variety of music, and I think that’s part of why people love coming here,” says Dave. Whether it’s a familiar pop hit or an experimental fusion band, the vibe is always electric.

Community-Centered and Culturally Rich

At its core, Craft aims to give back to the community. “We always buy local and seek interesting collaborations with local businesses,” Dave shares. Situated in a prime location, Craft is easily accessible to tourists visiting nearby attractions, but it’s also deeply rooted in the local culture. “We’re not just a place for tourists. We’re part of the local fabric, supporting Cambodian brewers and musicians.”

The Cambodia Connection

For Dave, Craft is more than just a business—it’s a reflection of his love for Cambodia and its people. “Cambodia has been my home for 16 years, and it’s the diversity of both the locals and the expats that keeps me here,” he says. “The pace of change has been incredible, and it’s been a privilege to be part of that transformation. I’ve met amazing people here—people I wouldn’t have encountered if I’d stayed in the UK.”

Despite the post-COVID challenges that businesses like Craft have faced, Dave remains optimistic: “We opened right after COVID, hoping to capitalize on the rebound. It hasn’t materialized as we expected, but we’re still enjoying the ride. And I think that’s the spirit of Craft—no matter what, we keep things fun and fresh.”

A Must-Visit Spot in Phnom Penh

Whether you’re a beer enthusiast, a music lover, or simply someone in search of great food, Craft has something for everyone. With its central location, inviting atmosphere, and commitment to quality, it’s no wonder Craft is becoming a go-to destination in Phnom Penh.

In a city as fast-paced and ever-evolving as Phnom Penh, Craft offers a place where you can sit back, enjoy a drink, and take in the magic of live music. As Dave puts it, “We just try to fuse everything in a way that works for us, our staff, and our customers.”

So the next time you’re in Phnom Penh, make sure to stop by Craft. Whether you’re here for the beer, the bands, or the buzz of excitement in the air, one thing’s for sure—you’ll be back.

Cakes and Crafts: A Slice of American Flavor in Tuol Tom Poung https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/cakes-and-crafts-a-slice-of-american-flavor-in-tuol-tom-poung/ Thu, 05 Sep 2024 10:50:01 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=13108

Finding itself fast becoming a favorite in Phnom Penh’s busy Tuol Tom Poung district, Gage’s American Style Hamburger Restaurant and Bar – Cakes and Crafts – has been making waves since opening in 2020.

What began as a bakery with a craft beer tasting room has blossomed into one of the city’s top spots for mouthwatering burgers and a welcoming atmosphere. We sat down owner, Gage, to find out what the fuss is about.

“We are an American Style Hamburger Restaurant and Bar located in Tuol Tom Poung,” Gage shared. “From our original location, we embraced the idea of fresh-baked buns and house-made ingredients.”

From Bakery to Burger Haven: A Dream Realized

Indeed, despite a few interruptions due to the Covid pandemic, the restaurant bar has really found it’s niche.

“Originally, this was the dream: a nice place for people to spend time, socialize, and enjoy quality food and drinks.” Today, that dream is thriving, with the restaurant drawing a full house nearly every night, making it a hot spot for both locals and expats. Gage emphasizes the importance of community, noting, “Our goal has always been quality, and we have continued to refine our recipes over the years while adding new items to our menu.”

Commitment to Quality: A Unique Burger Experience

Quality is at the heart of everything they do. “We make everything in-house, from our bread to our sauces,” Gage explains.

“We only use the freshest and best quality produce, and we train our staff using the Food Worker Manual from the Washington State Department of Health.” This commitment to safety and excellence reassures guests, especially those cautious about foodborne illnesses. Gage adds, “Our customer base tends to be some of the friendliest people, and you can always expect a good conversation, whether you’ve been in the country for a day or 10 years.”

What sets Gage’s burger joint apart from the competition? “While there are many great burger shops in Phnom Penh, we believe ours to be just a bit different. Our personal touch to the ingredients and flavors, bringing our local flavors from California to our shop here in Cambodia, and the overall mood of our restaurant are all things that separate us from other shops.”

“What we can say is that you won’t be disappointed, and if you are an American craving a taste of home, we’ve got you,” he smiled.

A Community Thing!

Gage and his team are equally committed to giving back to the community. “Whether through our contributions of food to local shelters and NGOs or donations directly to people in need, we do what we can to offer assistance,” he says. The training they provide also empowers staff, many of whom have gone on to pursue culinary scholarships abroad, showcasing their growth and success.

In closing, Gage shares a heartfelt sentiment about his connection to Cambodia and the Tuol Tom Poung community.

“While we may just be a burger restaurant, we try to do more than what is required, and we care a lot about this community. For this reason, I will never stop trying to repay that energy,” Gage also added that he is always eager to support fellow entrepreneurs and anyone with questions about starting a business in the area.

Botanico Craft Beer Garden: A Key Players in Cambodia’s Craft Beer Revolution https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/botanico-craft-beer-garden/ Fri, 01 Mar 2024 14:50:58 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=6761
Botanico Craft Beer Garden

Botanico Craft Beer Garden is more than just a place to enjoy an exceptional brew; it’s a thriving community hub, an oasis of relaxation, and a pioneering force in Cambodia’s craft beer scene.

Born from a passion for quality beer and a desire to create a shared space for art, music, and social gatherings, Botanico has blossomed into a cherished green haven in the city’s center.

Speaking on the formation of the beer garden, Marco Günther said the journey began with a simple realization: Cambodia was in need of good beer. This insight led Erich, the original founder, along with his friends, to start brewing their own beer at home.

“Originally, Botanico was set up to give a home to the craft beer produced in a small production facility in Toul Tompong. And from the beginning on, the focus was always on creating community space. We hosted art exhibitions, get-togethers, live music, art workshops for kids and adults, charity events, quizzes and much more. People love the fact that this is a really green space which is quite rare in the center of Phnom Penh.

“What started as a hobby among friends quickly evolved into a mission to share their creations with a broader audience. Fast forward ten years, and Botanico now proudly houses its brewery on the same premises, ensuring that patrons can enjoy freshly brewed beer steps away from where it’s crafted,” he said.

In August 2023, a new chapter began for Botanico with the addition of Marco as a new partner to the business. With a background as a brewmaster, he has injected a fresh focus on the craft, aiming to elevate Botanico Brewing Company (the brewery’s future name) to new heights.

“I want to help establishing a real Cambodian craft beer scene and make the whole movement driven by Cambodians, using as many locally grown ingredients as possible. On top of that, we are eager to educate the people about craft beer, explaining the difference to industrial beer, also in terms of health benefits and eventually trying to change the mindset of the people, viewing beer as a stimulant, something that creates a unique experience, rather than a means of getting drunk.”

He said he enjoys working in the Cambodian craft beer business, because it is a great community of like-minded people that support each other.

He added, “Honestly, I stay at Botanico almost all day, every day. Not because I have to, but because I love to. I fell in love with this place and the environment. And it’s also quite nice to enjoy the beer that I designed in the evening!”

Indeed, Botanico’s ethos extends beyond simply brewing beer; it’s about redefining the beer experience in Cambodia. Education plays a crucial role in this mission, as Botanico aims to enlighten the public about the nuances of craft beer, highlighting its health benefits over industrial alternatives and promoting responsible consumption.

Perhaps the surprise brought by the combination of fruit gives it a sweet pink body, just like the heart of a charming girl’s first love, with low alcohol content, and you can drink it all day without worrying.

All of the beers are solid, and it is easy to tell a high degree of craftsmanship and quality has gone into the creation of each specific beer. Both the IPA’s and the White Rabbit Porter are standouts in our humble opinion.

If it is your first visit to the brewery and you want to give a couple of different beers a sample, they offer tasting sets to customers, which allow you to sample up to four different brews at a time.

For non-beer-drinkers, there are a variety of non-alcoholic options, including sodas and a cocktail list that we have yet to sample but are presented masterfully.

At the entrance of Prince Brewing, there is a takeaway beer fridge that features their entire lineup in very stylized cans available for takeaway so customers can enjoy Prince Brewing beer from the comfort of their homes.

While Prince Brewing is undoubtedly not the cheapest craft beer bar in town, with the beers coming at a comparatively high cost to other craft beer bars, the value is more than made up for by the stunning modern brewhouse, and it’s incredible one of a kind atmosphere in Phnom Penh.

If you would like to visit Prince Brewing yourself and see what all the hype is about you can visit them at Prince Brewing ,BLVD Samdach Sothearos(Street 3, Phnom Penh, Cambodia Phnom Penh, Cambodia 12200)

Kep Gets Draft Craft – Courtesy of Raingsey Bungalows https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/kep-gets-draft-craft-courtesy-of-raingsey-bungalows/ Mon, 08 Nov 2021 07:19:00 +0000 https://cambodialifestyle.com/kep-gets-draft-craft-courtesy-of-raingsey-bungalows/

One of the best things about Kep is just how sleepy a town it is, that is at least until nightfall hits and you find you have little to do. Raingsey Bungalows are trying to change all of that though, not just with events, but also with the great news that Kep gets draft craft, finally.

To read about rainy days in Kep click here.

Where can I get draft beer in Kep?

There are a smattering of places that do Angkor, or Cambodia beer on tap in Kep, but until this coming Tuesday the craft beer scene in the seaside town has been lacking to say the least. Raingsey Bungalows will be trailblazing draft craft from Fuzzy Logic, with there initially being two beers, namely their 6.8% IPA, as well as the 4.8% Blonde offering, with the resort planning on expanding the range in the future.

Who are Raingsey Bungalows

Raingsey Bungalow, who describe themselves as a small 3-star resort near the Kep Crab Market initially caught our attention due to their previously held movie night, which you can read about here.

As well as the aforementioned film night, they also run a number of other weekly events, as well as offering deluxe bungalows for as little as $40 a night.

When can I get my draft craft in Kep?

Raingsey Bungalows will be holding an event this Tuesday to mark the independence of Cambodia, which as well as the aforementioned draft beer, will also include tacos and burritos from the onsite Colombian chefs, and music from resident Khmer Nights writer Phil Javelle and Sylvain Louver.

Speaking to Khmer Nights resort manager Sylvain Louvel told us “We are really excited to have the first draft craft beer in Kep and hope our events will bring together both the local community and visitors alike”.

You can check out the Kep Kambucha Facebook page here, as well as RSVP the event via Raingsey Bungalows here.

Why do Cambodians put ice in beer? If you’re from a western beer-swigging nation then one of the stranger discoveries when you arrive in Cambodia is the whole ice in your beer thing.

If you’ve yet to have it, it goes a little something like this! When you are at a street food establishment, Khmer BBQ type joint, or even a bog-standard sit-down restaurant, particularly in the countryside you are given warm beer and a glass filled with ice.

This may not only come as a shock, but will also beg the question of why do Cambodians put ice into beer? Khmer Nights went to explore this South-East Asian phenomenon.

Why do Cambodians put ice in beer?

Cambodians are not the only country to do the ice-in-beer combo, it’s also rather popular in Vietnam. The history and reasoning though is ever so simple. Back in the day refrigeration was hard, expensive, and even if it was available, capacity was limited.

In China this problem was solved by simply serving warm, or room temperature beer, something anyone who has spent any time in the PRC will be able to attest to. In South-East Asia it was easier to get ice, which could be stored in coolers rather than travel about with a refrigerator, so the ice in beer phenomenon was born.

So, that explains the history of ice-in-beer, but with refrigerators now a thing, why does it still get served?

21st Century Ice in Beer

For street food vendors it is still easier to cart around bags of ice than it is to set up a fridge on the street, but in many Khmer restaurants that do have refrigeration you will still get served a cold beer with a bowl of ice, or at least be given the option to add ice to your Anchor.

Now whilst we may snobbishly balk at the concept of ice in beer, this is what many people have grown up with and seem to prefer. When you are in a non-AC drinking setting then beers get warm really quickly. Ice in beer keeps it cool and to an extent waters it down a bit to help keep you drinking longer, AKA stay more sober.

Should you put ice in beer?

Much like anything it boils down to taste and preference, but while you wouldn’t exactly want ice-cubes in a fine Cambodian craft-beer, when you are sitting poolside, ice-in-beer is not only refreshing, but if you really want to sex things up, add a little bit of sprite – the beer-on-ice Cambodian shandy – and yes it counts as a cocktail.

And that is why Cambodians put ice in beer.
