Exploring the Flavors of Kampot: A Journey with Salt https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/exploring-the-flavors-of-kampot-a-journey-with-salt/ Fri, 26 Apr 2024 11:33:24 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=9303

If you are walking along the idyllic riversides of Kampot, you may come across Salt, an establishment which stands as a testament to a fusion of cultures and flavors from around the world. Step inside and you’re also likely to meet Angus and Kiara, the dynamic duo behind this culinary haven, offering a taste of their Australian roots blended with the warmth of Cambodian hospitality. We sat down over a signature coffee to find out more!

Hailing from Queensland, Australia, Angus and Kiara first set foot in Cambodia in 2007. Enchanted by Cambodian culture and the warmth of its people, they found themselves drawn back time and again.

“We decided in 2011 instead of travelling, partying and missing morning busses we would instead invest and try to set up a small cafe to sustain ourselves for an extended stay!”

“The original ‘cafe espresso’ opened on 11/11/11 in an old colonial building in the city centre. The shop grew organically and we soon found ourselves short on seating. We have since moved espresso to its new home, a retired sea salt storage warehouse that we renovated,” they added.

As Cafe Espresso flourished, Angus and Kiara sought new horizons. They envisioned a space where creativity could thrive, a place where gastronomic experimentation knew no bounds.

Find out the best thing’s to do in Cambodia

“Salt was born out of an opportunity to renovate a pair of colonial buildings on the river. We wanted to showcase creative menu items and cocktails while leaving the flagship cafe espresso and rumblefish roastery intact.”

“We opened Salt in December 2023 and are in phases of trialling and implementing exciting new options. It’s a space where we can experiment and follow our creativity around food and drinks to keep things interesting and appealing.”

With Cafe Espresso and Rumblefish Specialty Roasters as its siblings, Salt completes the trifecta, offering a symphony of flavors to tantalize the senses!

A Family Affair

At its core, Salt is more than just a business; it’s a family affair. Angus, Kiara, and their team pour their hearts into creating a welcoming environment, where patrons are embraced like old friends.

“We strive to deliver quality on all fronts, service, taste and experience. We want our customers to leave with a big smile and a full belly!”

Coffee is and has always been a big foundation of our operation, being the only small batch roastery in kampot to deliver high quality beans with no additives.

With a focus on integrity and authenticity, Salt strives to uphold the values of community and camaraderie.

What sets Salt apart is its commitment to quality and innovation. From handcrafted cocktails to inventive menu offerings, every dish tells a story, every sip a journey. As the only small-batch roastery in Kampot, Rumblefish Specialty Roasters ensures that each cup of coffee is a testament to excellence, free from additives and full of flavor.

A Taste of Tradition, A Dash of Innovation

Salt isn’t just about serving great food; it’s about enriching the community and diversifying the culinary landscape. By embracing local talent and championing unique flavor combinations, Salt seeks to redefine the dining experience, one plate at a time. In a world of conformity, Salt dares to stand out, inviting patrons to embark on a culinary odyssey unlike any other.

“We have never been in the business of following the masses. We rely heavily on word of mouth and organic reach. Therefore, we have always tried to set ourselves apart with unique flavour combinations that steer away from the basic and allow customers to enjoy their experience.”

A Home Away from Home

For Angus and Kiara, Cambodia isn’t just a destination; it’s a way of life. With their family roots firmly planted in the soil of Kampot, they have found a place where dreams take flight and bonds are forged.

“Since our family started to grow 10 years ago with our children, we believe Cambodia is a great place to raise a family. Our team are all from local villages and it is an honour to be able to support and see their skills grow over time.”

Kampot Pioneers Eco-Tourism with growing range of Agro-Adventures https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/kampot-pioneers-eco-tourism/ Sat, 16 Mar 2024 11:19:21 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=7144

In Kampot, Cambodia, an innovative era of eco-tourism is emerging, enchanting global wanderers with its allure. Transitioning into a post-pandemic world, the enchanting fusion of Kampot’s historical elegance and agricultural wonders is pioneering the path toward immersive agro-tourism adventures.

Agro-tourism, a burgeoning facet of the eco-tourism industry, invites visitors to immerse themselves in agricultural life. It’s an opportunity for travelers to connect with the land, understand where their food comes from, and participate in farming activities. This form of tourism not only supports local economies but also promotes sustainable practices and cultural exchange.

A multifaceted destination

Kampot, renowned for its colonial-era architecture and illustrious pepper plantations, is now making waves with its latest attraction: the salt fields of Chum Kreal commune in Teuk Chhou district.

This natural spectacle has quickly become a magnet for tourists, attracting hundreds each day with its breathtaking landscapes, gentle breezes, and mesmerizing sunsets. Despite the area not being fully standardized for tourism, local salt field owners have ingeniously catered to this influx by establishing eateries and cafes, allowing visitors to bask in the area’s serene beauty.

The significant rise in foreign tourist arrivals post-COVID-19 underscores Kampot’s appeal. January 2024 saw 8,000 visitors, a number that swelled to 12,000 by February and continues to climb. This resurgence is a testament to the allure of Kampot’s natural and cultural heritage, further bolstered by the Provincial Governor HE Mao Thunin’s vision of transforming Chum Kreal’s salt fields into a prime agro-tourism destination.

But Kampot’s agro-tourism allure doesn’t end with salt fields. The province is also famed for its Kampot pepper, a coveted spice that has garnered international acclaim. Visitors have the unique opportunity to tour pepper plantations, learn about the meticulous cultivation process, and even partake in pepper picking. These hands-on experiences deepen visitors’ appreciation for this prized commodity and the painstaking effort behind its production.

Across Cambodia, the integration of agriculture and tourism is witnessing a renaissance, reflecting a growing interest in eco-tourism. This movement not only enriches travelers’ experiences but also contributes to the preservation of local cultures and practices. As Kampot leads by example, showcasing the multifaceted joys of agro-tourism, it beckons to those seeking authentic, sustainable travel experiences, marking a significant step forward in Cambodia’s eco-tourism narrative.

In a momentous achievement, the picturesque Cambodian coastal towns of Kep and Kampot, situated as the capitals of their respective provinces, have been bestowed with the esteemed fourth ASEAN Clean Tourist City Standard for the years 2024-2026.

The recognition was formally conferred during an award ceremony held on January 26, 2024, in the enchanting Lao capital, Vientiane. The event, held under the theme “Quality and Responsible ASEAN-Sustaining ASEAN Future,” saw the presence of tourism ministers from ASEAN member nations, alongside representatives from China, Japan, South Korea, and several other countries.

Accepting the award on behalf of Kep, provincial governor Som Piseth expressed his gratitude on January 28, attributing the significant achievement to the collaborative efforts of provincial authorities and residents alike.

Piseth detailed that Kep’s recognition was based on various criteria, encompassing a pristine environment, public order, tourism development, sanitation, waste management, and water treatment.

“This award is crucial, serving as a reminder – particularly to the youth – of the importance of collective endeavors to safeguard the environment,” Piseth emphasized. He underscored the award’s significance, not only for Kep but for the entire Kingdom of Cambodia, elevating its global profile and showcasing numerous world-class destinations.

However, Piseth acknowledged that with this recognition comes a shared responsibility to ensure the town’s cleanliness is sustained. He highlighted the imperative need for continued efforts in environmental preservation.

Simultaneously, the Kampot Provincial Administration confirmed that Kampot also secured the same prestigious award for the 2024-2026 period.

During the previous assessment period of 2022-2024, three other Cambodian towns – Battambang, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville – were honored with the ASEAN Clean Tourist City Award.

The ASEAN secretariat clarified that these awards encompass various categories, acknowledging excellence in places, tourism entities, and specialist products and services.
