Smoke on the Water

As the sun dips below the Phnom Penh skyline this May, a new event is set to make waves along the Mekong – Smoke on the Water. This twilight charity cruise, followed by an open-air afterparty, promises a night of indulgence, community, and meaningful support for a great cause.

Hosted by Cigar Comprandes Cambodia, Smoke on the Water blends the art of fine cigars, premium whisky, and live music into a unique riverside experience, all while raising funds to support the children of Sunrise Cambodia.

An Evening on the Mekong

The night begins aboard the Mekong Magic Cruise, a spacious, two-deck vessel that offers sweeping views of Phnom Penh’s twinkling skyline as it glides along the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. Guests will be welcomed with a glass of Nikka Whisky, courtesy of Moonshine, as they step aboard at Koh Pich. For the first 75 guests, the evening includes a complimentary Confidenciaal cigar by Bertie’s, setting the tone for an evening of refined indulgence.

As the cruise gently makes its way down the river, live music will provide the perfect backdrop to the city’s glittering lights, creating a relaxed but festive atmosphere. Alongside the music, guests can savor a selection of tapas from Compass Mexican and Mekong Fine Foods, ensuring that the night’s pleasures extend beyond just the smoke and spirits.

From the Water to the Dance Floor

After the cruise, the night continues at Chew & Bash, one of Phnom Penh’s newest riverside hangouts, located at the lively Coconut Park. Known for its laid-back vibe and vibrant social scene, Chew & Bash offers the perfect setting for the event’s afterparty. Guests can enjoy Mediterranean bites from Hummus House, more top-shelf pours from Botanico, and a high-energy set from DJ Dr. WahWah, known for his eclectic mixes that keep the dance floor moving long into the night.

A Night for a Cause

While the focus is on indulgence and connection, the heart of Smoke on the Water lies in its charitable mission. All proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing a piano for the children of Sunrise Cambodia, adding a powerful, lasting note of generosity to the evening.

M’Pai Bay: The Cambodian Island Village That’s Doing Things Differently https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/mpai-bay-the-cambodian-island-village/ Tue, 13 May 2025 07:52:00 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16194
Cambodian Island

On the northern tip of Koh Rong Sanloem lies a village that feels like a world apart. M’Pai Bay—also known as Village 23—isn’t your typical island destination. It’s a living, breathing community where Khmer fishing families and international residents coexist, bound by a love of nature, simplicity, and sustainable living.

For Alex, owner of the beachfront spot MY WAY, it’s this mix that makes the place so special. “M’Pai Bay has been a functioning village for decades, but it’s only in the past 10 years that it’s become more known as a destination,” he says. “The dream is to preserve the authenticity of the village while allowing it to evolve with care.”

A Slower Rhythm of Life

Tourism has arrived gently in M’Pai Bay, and with it, a sense of balance many destinations lose. “The best thing about M’Pai Bay is its nature—the turquoise, crystal-clear sea, the rich marine life, the soft beaches and the peaceful jungle that surrounds the village,” says Alex. “It’s a place where people smile easily and live simply. There’s a strong sense of contentment here. People are happy with not much.”

That simplicity creates a kind of peace. “As a visitor or new resident, you feel safe, welcome and at home almost instantly.”

Cambodian Island

A Real Community, Not Just a Resort

Unlike heavily developed beach towns, M’Pai Bay has held onto something rare—soul. “People should visit because it offers something you won’t find in big resorts or overdeveloped beach towns: authenticity,” Alex explains. “It’s a place to disconnect from pressure, meet people who genuinely care about their environment, and support small, community-led businesses.”

There’s plenty to do for those who want it—snorkeling, diving, jungle trekking, kayaking, village clean-ups, and weekly events. “You can also find very good restaurants and home-cooked meals here,” he adds. “There’s a large choice of activities and events happening in this little village.”

A Model for Conscious Island Living

M’Pai Bay stands out not just for what it is, but for what it represents—a different way of doing tourism. “The village offers a sustainable, people-focused model for island living and tourism,” says Alex. “It supports local employment, small-scale eco-tourism and cross-cultural collaboration.”

From environmental projects to educational initiatives, the village works together to keep its charm intact. “Every 23rd of the month, we organize a community fest to raise funds to help improve the village and maintain the beaches. It’s one of the ways we stay connected and give back.”

Cambodian Island

A Place That Stays With You

At its heart, M’Pai Bay is more than just a place to visit. It’s a place that changes you. “M’Pai Bay has this rare magic; it slows you down and makes you feel part of something real,” says Alex. “The sunsets, the kids playing on the sand, the landscapes, the simplicity—it all adds up to something that’s hard to describe but easy to feel.”

For Alex and many others who’ve made their home here, M’Pai Bay is a reminder that the best places aren’t always the most built up. Sometimes, they’re the ones that stay true to themselves.

“Cambodia has given this village a soul, and the people here give it life. That’s what makes it worth visiting.”

Cambodia’s Boutique Hotels Shine in Global Rankings – A Testament to Khmer Hospitality https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/cambodias-boutique-hotels-shine-in-global-rankings/ Thu, 08 May 2025 03:57:28 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16214

Cambodia’s hotel scene has just scored a major win on the global stage, with several locally owned properties securing top spots in TripAdvisor’s 2025 Travelers’ Choice Awards. This year’s rankings are a big deal for the Kingdom’s tourism industry, highlighting the exceptional hospitality and personalized experiences that have become hallmarks of Cambodian stays.

Leading the pack is Golden Temple Residence in Siem Reap, crowned the #1 Small & Boutique Hotel in the World. Its sister property, Golden Temple Hotel, claimed the #10 spot globally in the same category, while Golden Temple Boutique secured #9 in Asia. The recognition didn’t stop there – Golden Temple Retreat and Golden Temple Villa also made it into the global top 10, marking a significant achievement for the Temple Group.

Temple Group’s managing director, Lee Kimmey, expressed pride in the brand’s impact, noting that it’s about more than just rooms – it’s about creating unforgettable experiences. “We’re deeply proud that our properties are being recognised on this level. It’s not just about rooms – it’s about making people feel something real,” she said, reflecting the ethos that has made these hotels so popular among travelers.

Siem Reap Shines on the World Stage

While the Golden Temple properties dominated the boutique category, other Siem Reap hotels also stood out. Jaya House River Park, a serene retreat nestled along the banks of the Siem Reap River, claimed the #21 spot in the Luxury Hotel category. Known for its eco-friendly focus and stunning design, it’s a favorite for those seeking a more exclusive experience.

Another standout, Khmer Mansion Residence, earned praise for its warm, personalized service, solidifying Siem Reap’s status as a global hotspot for boutique luxury.

Phnom Penh’s Hidden Gem

Cambodia’s capital also got some love, with Palace Gate Hotel & Resort By Ehm ranked #24 in Asia. Located near the iconic Royal Palace, this property blends French colonial architecture with lush gardens, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Guests consistently highlight its impeccable service and prime location as key reasons for its top-tier ranking.

A Testament to Local Excellence

Thim Sereyvudh, director of the Siem Reap Tourism Department, pointed out that many of these award-winning properties are locally owned – a source of immense national pride. “I have travelled abroad, and in some cases, even four-star hotels in Europe do not match our level of hospitality and food service,” he said, emphasizing the unique, guest-centric approach that sets Cambodian hotels apart.

From personalized service to diverse culinary options that cater to a wide range of international tastes, Cambodian hotels have clearly found a winning formula. This recognition underscores the growing reputation of Cambodian hospitality, proving that world-class service isn’t just about luxury – it’s about making guests feel at home, wherever they come from.

More Hidden Gems to Explore

For those planning their next Cambodian getaway, there are plenty of other standout stays to consider. FCC Angkor by Avani, with its colonial charm and riverside location, and Shinta Mani Angkor, known for its striking design and social impact focus, also offer exceptional experiences in Siem Reap. Meanwhile, Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh remains a timeless favorite for those seeking old-world elegance in the heart of the capital.

Cambodia’s boutique hotel scene is clearly having a moment, and if these awards are anything to go by, that moment is just getting started.

Dancing Across Cultures: How DJ Lily Is Changing Phnom Penh’s Soundtrack https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/dj-lily-is-changing-phnom-penhs-soundtrack/ Mon, 05 May 2025 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16191

Something special happened at our recent InterNations rooftop event at Hotel KVL. As the sun dipped over the Tonle Sap and the cocktails flowed, a wave of energy swept through the crowd, and at the centre of it was DJ Lily. With her signature blend of Latin rhythms, global beats, and infectious charisma, she turned a casual networking night into a celebration of movement, culture, and connection. We knew we had to find out more.

So, we sat down with DJ Lily, Phnom Penh’s rising musical force, to learn how she ended up spinning on Cambodian rooftops, what drives her unique style, and why music can be a bridge between people from all walks of life.

Hey Lily, tell us a bit about yourself — how did you end up behind the decks?

I’m DJ Lily, originally from Latin America, and music has always been a huge part of my life. I became a DJ because I wanted to share joy, energy, and culture — to create moments people remember. I love mixing genres that get people moving, especially reggaeton, salsa, bachata, afrobeats, and international pop. It’s not just about playing songs. I want people to feel something when I play.

Discover More Events In Cambodia

How did your Cambodia DJ journey start?

“I’ve been DJing for around 8 years, but I started my project in Cambodia in 2022 when I became the resident DJ at Up by KVL — such a beautiful rooftop and great team. Since then, I’ve played at festivals in Thailand and Malaysia, and collaborated with Cambodian artists. The dream now is to keep growing, keep exploring, and create more events that bring different cultures together through music.”

Indeed, Lily doesn’t just play sets — she curates experiences. Each performance is tailored to the mood, crowd, and venue, and her ability to read a room is one of the reasons she’s getting booked more and more across the region.

What do you love most about DJing here in Cambodia?

When I play music and people start to smile, dance, and let go — that’s everything. There’s something about Cambodia that makes people open to new vibes. I’ve found such a warm, welcoming atmosphere here, and I always try to return that energy. Every set is a chance to connect and celebrate something bigger than just sound.

What makes your sets different from others? Why should someone come see you play or book you?

I bring something you might not find easily in Phnom Penh — a mix of Latin flavor and global energy. I adapt to the space and audience, but the essence is always high-energy, joyful, and inclusive. I don’t just want people to dance; I want them to feel like they’ve travelled somewhere else, even just for a night.

Discover more places to Eat, Drink & Stay in Cambodia

How do you see your music contributing to the local scene?

I think I offer something fresh. Many locals and expats are looking for more cultural variety in the nightlife scene. I try to help diversify what’s out there — collaborating with artists, organising themed nights, and just being part of that growing wave of creative energy. Music is a universal language, and I love using it to create community here.

And finally… what keeps you in Cambodia? What do you love most about living here?

Honestly, the kindness. The people, the energy — there’s a vibe here that feels very real. I came just to explore, but I stayed because I fell in love with the country and the culture. Cambodia gave me the space to grow and express myself, and I’m excited for what’s next.
