When I wrote about Cambodia’s tourism sector in 2023, I went out on a whim to explore what I thought would turn a negative – COVID – into a positive – diversified tourism. Fast forward 3 years with the tourism sector on the path to recovery, there’s still a long way to go. But, I thought I’d revisit this subject and discuss where ‘niche tourism’ stands today and what it offers Cambodia’s key sector in its continued recovery.

It’s important to start by saying that while international arrivals have increased significantly since the borders reopened, the industry has yet to fully rebound. The loss of key markets, shifting traveler priorities, and ongoing economic challenges have meant that Cambodia’s tourism sector is still finding its footing.

However, one promising avenue for long-term sustainability is niche tourism—a sector that focuses on quality over quantity, attracting visitors who seek meaningful, immersive experiences while spreading economic benefits to communities beyond Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Rather than relying on mass tourism, which has proven fragile in times of crisis, Cambodia is increasingly looking toward eco-tourism, cultural heritage tourism, adventure travel, wellness retreats, and food tourism to shape its future. While challenges remain, these specialized travel experiences offer hope for a more resilient and diversified industry.

The Reality of Cambodia’s Post-Pandemic Tourism Recovery

Before the pandemic, Cambodia’s tourism sector was growing at a record pace, with over 6.6 million international visitors in 2019. The country was heavily reliant on large tour groups from China, South Korea, and Vietnam, as well as budget-conscious backpackers.

Fast forward to 2025, and things look very different. While international arrivals have slowly climbed past 5 million, the full recovery of mass tourism remains uncertain. Several factors have contributed to this:

  • Chinese tourism has not rebounded at pre-pandemic levels, with fewer large tour groups.
  • Economic downturns and rising travel costs have affected visitor numbers from Europe and North America.
  • Cambodia faces strong regional competition, particularly from Thailand and Vietnam, which offer more developed tourism infrastructure.
  • Domestic tourism helped sustain the sector during the pandemic, but it is not enough to replace international arrivals.

Despite these challenges, there’s an opportunity to rebuild tourism in a way that is more sustainable, diverse, and beneficial to local communities—and this is where niche tourism comes in.

Why Niche Tourism is Cambodia’s Best Bet for a Stronger Future

Instead of focusing purely on numbers, Cambodia’s tourism stakeholders are recognizing the value of attracting travelers who spend more, stay longer, and actively seek out unique experiences.

These niche travelers are not just here to check Angkor Wat off their bucket list—they want to explore beyond the main attractions, immerse themselves in local culture, and support sustainable businesses.

Here’s how niche tourism is shaping Cambodia’s future:

1. Eco-Tourism: Protecting Nature While Boosting Rural Economies

Cambodia’s lush forests, wildlife sanctuaries, and remote islands make it an ideal destination for eco-tourism. Post-pandemic, demand for sustainable travel has surged, with more travelers prioritizing experiences that support conservation efforts and local communities.

Key eco-tourism hotspots include:

Mondulkiri & Ratanakiri – Home to indigenous communities, elephant sanctuaries, and lush jungles perfect for trekking.
Koh Kong & the Cardamom Mountains – Featuring eco-lodges, jungle river kayaking, and one of Southeast Asia’s largest remaining rainforests.
The Mekong River & Stung Treng – Where visitors can spot rare Irrawaddy dolphins and support conservation efforts.

While eco-tourism has immense potential, it still faces challenges such as deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, and lack of investment in infrastructure. With the right policies and partnerships, it could become a key driver of sustainable growth.

2. Adventure Tourism: A Market with Huge Untapped Potential

Adventure tourism has seen steady growth in Cambodia, with an increasing number of travelers seeking outdoor thrills beyond temple tours.

Dirt biking across Cambodia’s countryside is becoming a major draw for thrill-seekers.
Kayaking through the floating forests of the Tonle Sap offers a unique look at Cambodia’s ecosystem.
Scuba diving in Koh Rong and Koh Sdach is improving, but still needs more infrastructure investment.
Rock climbing and caving in Kampot and Battambang is slowly gaining attention.

Unlike Thailand and Vietnam, Cambodia has not yet fully tapped into its adventure tourism potential. With better marketing and investment, this niche could become a major draw for younger, experience-driven travelers.

3. Cultural & Heritage Tourism: A Rising Star Beyond Angkor Wat

While Angkor Wat remains Cambodia’s biggest tourism attraction, heritage-focused tourism is expanding as travelers seek deeper connections with the country’s history and traditions.

Sambor Prei Kuk – A UNESCO-listed pre-Angkorian temple complex in Kampong Thom.
Phare Ponleu Selpak (Battambang) – A social enterprise circus that showcases Cambodian performing arts.
Khmer Craft Villages – Traditional weaving, pottery, and silk-making workshops are seeing growing interest.

By developing heritage trails, cultural homestays, and interactive experiences, Cambodia can spread tourism beyond Siem Reap and into lesser-known provinces.

4. Wellness & Spiritual Tourism: A Post-Pandemic Trend Gaining Ground

Post-pandemic, more travelers are prioritizing well-being, mindfulness, and relaxation—and Cambodia is well-positioned to tap into this trend.

Yoga retreats in Siem Reap and Kampot are attracting more long-term travelers.
Traditional Khmer healing therapies are being integrated into luxury resorts.
Nature-based wellness escapes are growing, particularly in eco-lodges and farm stays.

While wellness tourism is still a small segment, it has huge potential if marketed correctly to international travelers.

5. Food Tourism: Cambodia’s Culinary Scene Steps into the Spotlight

Cambodian cuisine is finally getting the recognition it deserves, with growing international interest in Khmer flavors.

🍲 Fine-dining Khmer cuisine (e.g., Embassy Restaurant in Siem Reap) is drawing global foodies.
🌶️ Food tours in Phnom Penh & Battambang are highlighting Cambodia’s diverse flavors.
🥘 Cooking classes & farm-to-table experiences are growing in popularity.

By promoting culinary tourism, Cambodia can attract a new type of visitor—one eager to explore the country through its food.

The Road Ahead: Challenges & Opportunities

Cambodia’s tourism industry is far from fully recovered, but niche tourism offers a path toward long-term sustainability. To truly rebuild stronger, the country needs:

More investment in eco-tourism infrastructure
Better marketing of adventure & cultural tourism
Policies that support sustainable development
Strong partnerships between the private sector, government, and local communities

While mass tourism may take longer to return, Cambodia’s shift toward specialized travel experiences is a positive step forward. By focusing on authenticity, sustainability, and quality tourism, the country can create a more resilient tourism industry that benefits both visitors and local communities.

The Future of Travel in Cambodia is Niche

Cambodia’s post-pandemic tourism industry is still finding its footing, but one thing is clear—niche tourism is the future. Whether it’s eco-adventures in the jungle, cultural deep dives into Khmer heritage, or culinary experiences that tantalize the taste buds, the Kingdom has so much more to offer beyond Angkor Wat.

For travelers looking for something different, something meaningful, Cambodia remains one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding destinations—a place where adventure, culture, and sustainability come together.

Baksaei Retreat: Meaningful Travel and Boutique Bliss in Kampot https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/baksaei-retreat/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 06:29:23 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15567

An Interview with Meg Lowder, Founder of Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas

Located at the mouth of the Tuek Chhou River and the foot of Bokor Mountain National Park lies a peaceful sanctuary run by someone who found herself unexpectedly—and joyfully—rooted in Cambodia. We sat down with Meg Lowder, an Australian expat and the heart behind Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas, to learn how a long-term traveler turned a chance stay in Kampot into a passion-fueled business with purpose.

Hi Meg, please introduce yourself.

“I’m Meg Lowder, an Australian expat living in Cambodia for 5 years. I have over 25 years’ experience in corporate business and currently work as a freelance writer and business/communications consultant focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Like many in Cambodia during the early pandemic days, Meg’s story started with a twist of fate.

“I was travelling long-term and became stranded here when the Covid-19 pandemic began, falling in love with the people and culture and settling in the gorgeous coastal town of Kampot.”

Her love for the country is tangible—not only has she made Kampot home, but she’s diving deep into the Khmer language and proudly shares, “I love sharing my passion for Cambodia with guests, along with my love of travel, having been to around 40 countries.”

Tell us about your business—Baksaei Retreat. What’s the idea behind it?

“We are a boutique 4-star guesthouse on the beautiful southern Cambodian coastline offering socially responsible holidays and meaningful travel.”

Located just 2km from downtown Kampot, Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas offers guests an intimate escape surrounded by rice fields and mountain views. Meg explains the vision: “We partner with local social enterprises, non-profits, and small businesses offering cultural experiences and activities… allowing you to explore the hidden gems of Cambodia’s southern coastline whilst giving back to the community – far from the crowds of Angkor Wat.”

The retreat features two-bedroom raised villas with fully equipped kitchens, private balconies, and what Meg lovingly calls “an oasis for nature-lovers and a haven for birds, frogs, dragonflies and more. But don’t worry, the friendly wildlife is our natural mosquito control system!”

The inspiration for Baksaei Retreat came from a combination of Meg’s commercial property background and a spontaneous visit from Australian friends.

“Some friends from country NSW in Australia spontaneously decided to come visit me in Cambodia… One lacked the confidence to travel independently and the other didn’t know where to begin with planning. I helped them understand the double currency exchange, arranged meaningful activities, and showed them all that beautiful Kampot has to offer… They were thrilled with their visit and suggested I should be doing this professionally.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

When did you launch Baksaei Retreat and what’s the dream moving forward?

“I started Baksaei Bed & Breakfast in April 2024 as a small homestay just outside of Kampot… Some months later, I started thinking about expanding the concept and began searching for a suitable location.”

By November, Meg had found a lush 3,000 sqm property near Kampot’s “International Village.” She signed a long-term lease, partnered with the Khmer owner, and began transforming the space. “In January 2025, we relocated… and rebranded to Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas, opening in February offering twin holiday villas set amongst the rice fields, with stunning mountain and countryside views and a private pool.”

Meg’s goal? “To create a gorgeous, quiet, green, oasis that feels both private and open to the nature around it, yet much closer to town than any other current similar offerings.” “Baksaei” means bird in Khmer language and the birdsong provides a soothing natural soundtrack.

As the gardens flourish and the rice grows with the seasons, Meg is focused on highlighting Kampot and Kep provinces as vibrant destinations in their own right, not just stopovers.

What do you love most about running Baksaei Retreat?

“Friends have always called me ‘Hostess with the Mostess’ – I love hosting people… One of the best things about this business is seeing guests’ faces when they arrive at Baksaei Retreat – the most common reaction is ‘wow!’”

Her mission is clear: “To provide service and an experience beyond expectations. I ensure guests are comfortable, have everything they need, and as much privacy as they want, but many are keen to chat about local life and ask for ideas on things to do.”

What sets Baksaei Retreat apart from other places?

“It’s not just a holiday villa, it’s an experience! The sound of the birds, frogs, palm leaves blowing in the breeze… I like to call it ‘Discovery Channel, Ricefield Edition’.”

Meg is filling a noticeable gap in Kampot’s high-end accommodation market, offering a product that appeals to locals and internationals alike. As one guest wrote: “Tastefully curated as a beautiful and aesthetic home in the Cambodian countryside that will make you feel like you have the perfect blend of western amenities with Cambodian tradition. It’s the perfect space to deeply rest, you may never want to leave.”

How does Baksaei Retreat support the local community?

“We partner with local charities and social enterprises to connect guests with meaningful activities in the area.”

Meg is also a strong advocate for promoting Cambodia’s lesser-known destinations to broader markets: “We are conducting targeted marketing to untapped markets such as Australia to bring new business into the local economy.”

And in a region where hospitality standards can vary, she’s committed to quality: “We are raising the standard of accommodation in Kampot to meet international expectations.”

What do you personally love about Cambodia and why have you stayed?

“One of the reasons I love living here is the sense of community and how everyone has ‘got each other’s back’… By referring to each other as ‘Bong’ (brother/sister), this creates a sense of comradery and friendliness I’ve not experienced in other cultures.”

A natural storyteller, Meg also weaves her experiences into writing. “I am a freelance writer and love to write about my observations of life in Cambodia – for example, you might appreciate this ‘tongue in cheek’ personal anecdote written during the pandemic, when most of the western world was panic-buying toilet paper – you’ll see I try to maintain a sense of humour!”

More than just a retreat, Baksaei is a reflection of her values. “I thrive working on professional projects where I can positively impact livelihoods and social advancement.”

Showcasing Cambodia to the World: A Conversation with Serva Travel Founder, Savath Mao https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/conversation-with-serva-travel-founder-savath-mao/ Fri, 04 Apr 2025 03:49:14 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15426

At Cambodia Lifestyle, we love connecting with visionary entrepreneurs who are shaping the way Cambodia is experienced by travelers. One such entrepreneur is Savath Mao, the founder and Managing Director of Serva Travel. His passion for his homeland and extensive experience in the tourism industry have led him to create a luxury travel company with a mission—offering unforgettable experiences while ensuring local communities benefit.

Q: What inspired you to start Serva Travel?

My story isn’t just about travel; it’s about my deep love for Cambodia and Southeast Asia, a perfect opportunity, and making a real difference. Over 18 years, I worked in tourism, leading tours and managing operations. I saw firsthand how travelers enjoyed Angkor Wat and the local markets, but they often missed the real story—the local people, our rich culture, and how tourism truly affects our communities. Luxury travel, especially, felt disconnected. I knew we could do better. I wanted to create a travel experience that was both luxurious and meaningful, one that helped preserve our heritage and benefited the people who make this region so special.

The time was right. People were starting to want more than just sightseeing; they craved real connections and experiences. My time at Intrepid Travel gave me the experience and knowledge to build something new. And most importantly, I felt a responsibility to create a company that offered amazing trips and helped our communities.

Q: How has Serva Travel grown since its inception?

I established the company because I saw a gap in the luxury travel market in Southeast Asia. Traditional luxury tours often overlook the authentic cultural experiences and the positive impact tourism can have on local communities. The original idea was to combine high-end accommodations and services with meaningful cultural immersion and sustainable practices. My goal was to bridge the gap between luxury travel and responsible tourism, ensuring that local communities benefit.

With my experience in the tourism industry, particularly at Intrepid Travel, I built Serva Travel on the foundation of authenticity, sustainability, and community engagement. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to these values, creating immersive experiences that transform both travelers and the communities they visit.

Q: What is your long-term vision for Serva Travel?

Serva Travel has been operational for nearly two years, but it is built on nearly two decades of experience. My dream is to redefine luxury travel in Cambodia and beyond by creating immersive and transformative experiences that benefit both travelers and local communities. I want to protect the region’s beauty and culture while empowering those who live here.

The timing felt right because travelers are looking for deeper connections, more meaningful experiences, and responsible tourism. My love for Cambodia, my industry experience, and my desire to create something truly impactful all played a role in launching Serva Travel. Some of our biggest highlights have been witnessing the impact of our experiences—seeing travelers deeply moved and knowing we are creating positive change within local communities. As we move forward, our focus remains on sustainable growth and reinforcing our commitment to responsible travel.

Q: What makes Serva Travel unique?

The best thing about Serva Travel is our commitment to meaningful luxury. We blend high-end travel with authentic cultural experiences and sustainable practices. We prioritize integrity, ethics, and a culture of respect for local communities and the environment. Our goal is to create transformative travel experiences that leave a lasting positive impact on both visitors and the people of Cambodia.

Q: Why should travelers choose Serva Travel?

Serva Travel fills the gap between traditional luxury travel and responsible, culturally immersive experiences. We offer unique opportunities to connect with local people, learn about their culture, and contribute to their well-being. Our focus on sustainable travel and community engagement makes us a compelling choice for travelers seeking experiences that go beyond sightseeing. We ensure that every journey is not only luxurious but also meaningful and impactful.

Q: How does Serva Travel benefit local communities and diversify Cambodia’s tourism offerings?

We work directly with local communities to ensure that tourism benefits them through employment, fair trade practices, and community development projects. We also diversify Cambodia’s tourism landscape by offering authentic cultural experiences that go beyond traditional sightseeing. By focusing on sustainable travel, we help protect the environment while creating economic opportunities for local people.

Q: What keeps you motivated to do this work?

My deep love for Cambodia is what drives me. I want to share this region’s beauty and culture with the world while ensuring its preservation. I’m passionate about creating a legacy of positive impact—one that allows both travelers and locals to benefit from tourism in a responsible and meaningful way.

At Serva Travel, we don’t just create trips; we create stories, connections, and lasting memories that make a difference. For anyone looking to experience Cambodia in a way that is luxurious yet responsible, we are here to make that journey unforgettable.

Exploring Cambodia’s Waters: Ioori Smirnov’s Journey from Seafood to Luxury Marine Adventures https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/exploring-cambodias-waters-ioori-smirnovs-journey/ Thu, 03 Apr 2025 04:58:38 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15362

For expats living in Cambodia or those considering a move, unique opportunities and ventures abound. The country’s evolving landscape presents a mix of challenges and rewards, particularly for those with an entrepreneurial mindset. One such expat, Ioori Smirnov, has transformed his expertise in investment, real estate, and technical consulting into an exciting marine tourism venture. From managing seafood exports to launching high-end sea expeditions, Ioori’s story is a testament to resilience and adaptability.

Q: Can you tell us about your business and how it started?

I have always been drawn to startups and complex projects, and this passion led me to Cambodia, guided by friends and partners with deep diplomatic and business ties in Southeast Asia.

From Seafood to Sea Adventures

In 2015, I became an investor and co-founder of a full-cycle seafood enterprise, partnering with a Cambodian professional with 20 years of experience in crab meat production. We specialized in catching, processing, and exporting Swimming Blue Crab (Portunus Pelagicus). To ensure sustainability and quality, we invested in motor schooners and implemented international food safety standards. However, the pandemic and my partner’s passing forced a halt in operations.

Rather than walk away, I transformed the boats for tourism and scientific expeditions. By 2022, the first schooner, “Sisters M,” was fully rebuilt and operational. The second, “IRINA,” is in its final stages. This shift marked the launch of MareAstra, a company specializing in luxury sea tourism, scientific expeditions, and professional marine consulting.

Q: How long has your business been operational, and what is your vision for the future?

Since April 2022, we have been offering sea tours, but my long-term vision extends beyond tourism. My dream is to develop and operate Cambodia’s first A-class marina in Sihanoukville, expand our fleet, and diversify maritime services. Cambodia lacks proper marina infrastructure, which significantly slows private marine activity.

I want to change that by bringing international expertise in development and management. At the same time, I’m passionate about restoring Cambodia’s beaches, which are increasingly affected by pollution. Sustainability is not just a goal—it’s a necessity.

Q: What is the best thing about your business?

The best part of my work is merging romance with pragmatism. MareAstra provides an opportunity for people to experience untouched paradise, discover new horizons, and create unforgettable memories. Whether it’s an island-hopping adventure or a scientific marine expedition, every trip is unique.

Q: Why should people choose your service?

We don’t claim to be the best—but our strengths speak for themselves:

  • Reliability & professionalism
  • Experience & top-tier service
  • Unmatched comfort & VIP treatment for all
  • Custom cruise planning for any budget

We offer much more than simple boat trips; our services include expert marine consulting, luxury island tours, and tailored experiences for both individuals and businesses.

Q: How does your business benefit the community and diversify activities in Cambodia?

Ah, the classic rhetorical question. I could channel a wise movie hero and say, “We do good – you do good.” Or I could launch into a grand lecture on how tourism boosts GDP, creates jobs, improves education, and elevates personal financial well-being.

But let’s be honest—that’s obvious, and I’ll spare you the TED Talk. Bottom line? More boats, more adventures, and more opportunities for people to experience the stunning side of Cambodia. Everyone wins.

Q: What do you love most about Cambodia, and what keeps you here?

Cambodia has a unique business environment. It’s a place where you can innovate, take risks, and shape the future. I appreciate the strong sense of family, welcoming locals, deep ties to nature, and the relatively open business climate. There’s also a pioneering spirit here—a mix of adventure and practicality that makes doing business exciting. It’s not always easy, but that’s part of the appeal.

For those seeking to explore Cambodia’s waters in style or looking for expert marine consulting, MareAstra is ready to set sail. Whether you’re an expat in search of a new experience or a visitor wanting to see Cambodia from a fresh perspective, the sea is calling.

Understanding Cambodia’s Currency in 2025: A Traveler’s Guide to Riel, US Dollars, and Modern Payments https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/understanding-cambodias-currency/ Wed, 02 Apr 2025 12:10:25 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15359

Cambodia’s currency situation is unique. Unlike its neighbors, where the local currency dominates, Cambodia operates on a dual-currency system, with the Cambodian Riel (KHR) and US Dollar (USD) co-existing in daily transactions. While this may seem confusing at first, it’s actually quite convenient for travelers. Whether you’re buying street food in Phnom Penh, shopping in Siem Reap, or withdrawing cash from an ATM in Sihanoukville, knowing how the local currency works can save you money and make your trip smoother.

Riel vs. US Dollar: How Cambodia’s Currency Works

The Cambodian Riel (KHR) – The Official Currency

The Riel (៛) is Cambodia’s official currency, with an exchange rate of approximately 4,100 Riel to 1 USD in 2025. While locals use Riel for smaller transactions, you’ll often receive Riel as change when paying in USD. However, you won’t find Riel available for exchange outside of Cambodia, so it’s best to use up any leftover Riel before leaving.

The US Dollar – Cambodia’s Second Currency

The US Dollar has been widely accepted in Cambodia for decades, particularly for larger purchases such as hotel stays, tours, and entry tickets to Angkor Wat. Many businesses even price their goods and services in USD. However, with recent economic changes, Cambodia has started moving toward greater reliance on the Riel. This means small USD notes ($1 and $5 bills) are gradually being phased out, and customers are expected to use Riel for minor purchases.

Exchanging Money in Cambodia

Currency exchange in Cambodia is simple and widely available. Exchange offices are common in city markets and offer better rates than airport kiosks or hotels. If you’re arriving with USD, you don’t need to exchange for Riel upfront—you’ll naturally receive it as change when making purchases.

Key tips for exchanging money:

  • Avoid exchanging at airports—their rates are often less favorable.
  • Check your US bills carefully—torn or damaged notes are sometimes rejected.
  • Bring larger USD bills ($10, $20, $50, $100)—smaller notes are becoming rare.

New Rules on Small & Damaged USD Bills

A big change in Cambodia’s financial system is the phasing out of $1 and $5 USD notes. If you pay in USD for something under $10, expect to receive change in Riel.

Another improvement is the recent acceptance of damaged or tinted US bills in Siem Reap, where banks are now required to accept them. Previously, businesses refused damaged notes, and tourists often struggled to spend them. While this is great news, it’s still best to carry crisp, undamaged notes to avoid complications.

ATMs in Cambodia

ATMs are widely available in major cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, and Sihanoukville. However, if you’re heading to remote areas or islands like Koh Rong, it’s best to withdraw cash in advance. ATM withdrawal fees in Cambodia range from $3 to $6 per transaction, so taking out larger amounts at once can help save on fees.

Digital Payments: Cambodia’s Growing Trend

Cash may still be king in Cambodia, but digital payments are on the rise, particularly in major cities. While you won’t find Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Alipay everywhere, mobile payment apps such as ABA Bank, Wing, and Pi Pay are increasingly accepted in restaurants, cafés, and some retail stores.

If you’re booking tours or shopping in Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, check if businesses accept credit cards or mobile payments—it’s becoming more common. However, always carry some cash, as digital payments are still rare in rural areas.

Traveler’s Money Tips for Cambodia

  • Carry both USD and Riel—Use Riel for small purchases and USD for larger ones.
  • Pay in Riel when the price is under $10—You’ll often get a better rate.
  • Don’t bother exchanging USD to Riel—You’ll naturally receive Riel as change.
  • Use $10, $20, or $50 USD bills—Larger notes are preferred.
  • Avoid torn or damaged USD bills—They may still be rejected outside Siem Reap.
  • Withdraw cash before heading to remote areas—ATMs are scarce outside cities.

Final Thoughts

Cambodia’s dual-currency system might seem unusual, but it’s actually very traveler-friendly. Whether you’re exploring ancient temples, relaxing on a tropical island, or shopping in local markets, knowing how to handle Riel and USD will make your trip stress-free. And with mobile payments on the rise, Cambodia is becoming even more accessible to modern travelers. So, pack your crisp USD bills, keep some Riel in your pocket, and enjoy your time in the Kingdom of Wonder!

Cambodia To The World! Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025 to Kick Off in Zhengzhou https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/cambodia-to-the-world-cambodia-china-tourism/ Thu, 27 Feb 2025 08:11:33 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14754

Cambodia’s dedication to fostering global cultural exchange continues with the launch of the Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025, set to take place on February 24-25 in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, China. Following the success of the 2024 Cambodia-China People-to-People Exchange Year, this initiative highlights Cambodia’s commitment to welcoming visitors from all backgrounds and strengthening international friendships through tourism and cultural immersion.

A Celebration of Multiculturalism

While the event specifically celebrates Cambodia-China relations, it represents something much broader—the growing inclusivity of Cambodia’s tourism industry. Over the years, Cambodia has positioned itself as a welcoming destination for visitors from across the globe, embracing diverse cultures through its heritage, traditions, and contemporary experiences.

The Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025 will feature joint cultural performances that showcase the richness of both nations’ traditions, including Shaolin and Bokator martial arts, as well as cultural exhibitions and tourism promotion events. However, the impact of such events goes beyond bilateral relations; they strengthen Cambodia’s reputation as a country that celebrates multiculturalism and values the contributions of international visitors.

Strengthening Global Partnerships Through Tourism

Tourism is one of Cambodia’s most significant economic sectors, with millions of visitors arriving each year from all corners of the world. The Cambodia-China Tourism Year is an opportunity to enhance people-to-people connections, build trade relations, and reinforce diplomatic and economic partnerships beyond just the Chinese market.

With its diverse tourism offerings—from the ancient temples of Angkor Wat to the pristine beaches of Koh Rong, the bustling streets of Phnom Penh, and the cultural heritage of Battambang—Cambodia has long been a magnet for travelers seeking rich experiences. This initiative further cements Cambodia as an open and welcoming hub for all cultures, not just a select few.

The Role of Infrastructure and Hospitality in a Growing Tourism Landscape

With international visitor numbers rising, Cambodia continues to develop infrastructure, hospitality services, and travel conveniences to better cater to tourists. Expanded flight routes, improved transportation, and investments in high-quality accommodations are all part of the strategy to make Cambodia an even more attractive destination for global travelers.

Chey Tech, a socio-economic researcher, emphasized that while attracting Chinese tourists is a key focus, Cambodia’s overall tourism strategy must be built on a foundation of inclusivity. “The Cambodia-China Tourism Year will help boost Chinese tourism, but for sustainable success, the government must also ensure high standards of hospitality and infrastructure that accommodate visitors from a range of cultural backgrounds,” he noted.

A Gateway to Global Engagement

The Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025 is just one example of Cambodia’s broader vision to position itself as a key player in international tourism. With strategic events that celebrate cultural exchange and inclusivity, Cambodia is strengthening its ties with China while also inviting the world to explore its rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality.

As Cambodia continues to open its doors to visitors from every nation, initiatives like these reaffirm its standing as a nation that thrives on diversity, connection, and shared experiences. With the upcoming event in Zhengzhou, the world is once again reminded that Cambodia is not just a destination—it is a global crossroads of culture, history, and future possibilities.

Cambodia’s Bakong Tourists App Now Supports Visa Cards for Easier Payments https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/cambodias-bakong-tourists-app/ Thu, 06 Feb 2025 07:17:50 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14590

Tourists visiting Cambodia now have a more convenient way to make payments, thanks to the integration of Visa cards with the Bakong Tourists App. The app, developed by the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), allows visitors to link their Visa cards from their home countries and make digital payments at approximately 4.5 million merchants across the country.

This integration enables tourists to pay by scanning KHQR codes at hotels, restaurants, shops, and other businesses, eliminating the need to carry large amounts of cash. In addition to direct payments, the app allows users to transfer funds to their individual Bakong accounts, providing an alternative way to manage spending while in Cambodia.

The official launch event for the Visa integration was attended by NBC Governor Dr. Chea Serey, along with representatives from government ministries, international payment firms, and private companies. The initiative is part of broader efforts to enhance Cambodia’s digital payment infrastructure, promote financial inclusion, and encourage the use of the local currency, the Khmer Riel.

Arturo Planell, Visa’s Group Country Manager for Regional Southeast Asia, emphasized the benefits of this development, stating that it supports both tourism businesses and small enterprises by making digital transactions more accessible to international visitors.

Making Travel to Cambodia’s Top Attractions Even Easier

The introduction of Visa payments through the Bakong Tourists App will significantly improve the experience of visiting Cambodia’s most popular sites. Tourists can now explore destinations like Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh’s Royal Palace, and the white sand beaches of Koh Rong without worrying about carrying cash or finding ATMs.

In Siem Reap, visitors can seamlessly pay for entrance tickets to the Angkor Archaeological Park, hire tuk-tuks for a sunrise tour, or grab a refreshing drink at one of the many cafes around Pub Street—all with a quick QR scan. In Phnom Penh, exploring the historic sites of the Royal Palace and the National Museum, booking boat cruises along the Mekong, or enjoying a night out at the city’s vibrant bars and restaurants is now easier with digital payments.

Markets across Cambodia, including the famous Phsar Thmey (Central Market) in Phnom Penh and the Night Market in Siem Reap, are known for their wide variety of handcrafted souvenirs, textiles, and street food. With KHQR payments now available through Visa, tourists can purchase locally made products with just a tap on their phone—no need to haggle over change or worry about carrying small bills.

Since QR code payments are already widely used by local businesses in Cambodia, this technology is highly accessible. As nearly every modern traveler carries a smartphone, using the Bakong Tourists App ensures a smooth and cash-free experience, making it easier than ever to enjoy everything Cambodia has to offer. With this new digital payment system in place, visitors can focus more on exploring Cambodia’s cultural and natural wonders while enjoying the convenience of seamless transactions throughout their trip.

How to visit North Korea from Cambodia https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/how-to-visit-north-korea-from-cambodia/ Thu, 06 Feb 2025 07:15:36 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14561

Today it was announced that North Korea would reopen to all tourists after five years of being closed, Cambodians included, which begs the question: how do you visit North Korea from Cambodia?

Well, Cambodia Lifestyle is here once again to answer these pressing questions, with, of course, an overland option.

What has been announced?

After nearly five years of strict border closures, North Korea is set to reopen for international tourism, with the first group tours scheduled to begin on February 16, 2025. Young Pioneer Tours (my company), the leading operator in DPRK travel, announced that the initial tours will focus on the Rason Special Economic Zone, located at the tri-border area of North Korea, China, and Russia.

A research trip is planned for February 10 to ensure smooth operations, followed by a four-day group tour priced at just €645. This reopening aligns with celebrations for Kim Jong Il’s birthday, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the country’s culture and economic initiatives.

While many expected Sinuiju to open first, Rason’s strategic position makes it an ideal starting point. YPT’s announcement signals a cautious yet significant step toward normalcy for North Korea and renewed opportunities for cultural exchange.

Can Cambodians visit North Korea?

All visitors to North Korea require a visa to visit, even Chinese and Russians, but the visa process is actually extremely simple and merely involves filling out a form, sending some documents, and then your travel agent dealing with the rest.

And North Korea is extremely welcoming of Cambodians coming to the country, as they formerly had great relations together. This was to such a degree that King Sihanouk declared Kim Il-Sung his best friend in the world. The King also previously lived in Pyongyang, while Phnom Penh boasts a Kim Il-Sung Street.

How to get from Cambodia to North Korea by Air

Any tour to North Korea for non-Russians at the moment needs to go via China, with the easiest way to do this obviously being to fly there. Currently, there are flights from as little as $50 from Phnom Penh to Shenzhen. From Shenzhen, you can then either connect to Beijing by flight. Currently, you would also need to get to Yanji, at least until Pyongyang tours resume.

Currently, only Air China offers a direct flight to Beijing, although numerous airlines have packages via other cities within Mainland China.

How to get from Cambodia to North Korea Overland

OK, the one we know you’ve all been waiting for! How to get from Cambodia to North Korea overland. Well, to do this, there are technically a few options, such as going to Vietnam and taking the Reunification Express, or going overland to Laos and then into China. We, though, have decided to do Cambodia to North Korea via Thailand.

This has us taking the train to Battambang, transferring to Poipet, and then crossing before taking the train all the way to Bangkok. From here, we take a night in Bangkok before taking another international train to Vientiane in Laos. Again, we chill for a night before jumping on the high-speed train to Kunming. From here, it’s a sleeper train to Beijing. From Beijing, you can either take the train to Dandong, or Yanji before heading into the DPRK!

And that is how you get from Cambodia to North Korea. You can check out the link for Young Pioneer Tours’ upcoming tour packages to Rason.
