Cambodian Island

On the northern tip of Koh Rong Sanloem lies a village that feels like a world apart. M’Pai Bay—also known as Village 23—isn’t your typical island destination. It’s a living, breathing community where Khmer fishing families and international residents coexist, bound by a love of nature, simplicity, and sustainable living.

For Alex, owner of the beachfront spot MY WAY, it’s this mix that makes the place so special. “M’Pai Bay has been a functioning village for decades, but it’s only in the past 10 years that it’s become more known as a destination,” he says. “The dream is to preserve the authenticity of the village while allowing it to evolve with care.”

A Slower Rhythm of Life

Tourism has arrived gently in M’Pai Bay, and with it, a sense of balance many destinations lose. “The best thing about M’Pai Bay is its nature—the turquoise, crystal-clear sea, the rich marine life, the soft beaches and the peaceful jungle that surrounds the village,” says Alex. “It’s a place where people smile easily and live simply. There’s a strong sense of contentment here. People are happy with not much.”

That simplicity creates a kind of peace. “As a visitor or new resident, you feel safe, welcome and at home almost instantly.”

Cambodian Island

A Real Community, Not Just a Resort

Unlike heavily developed beach towns, M’Pai Bay has held onto something rare—soul. “People should visit because it offers something you won’t find in big resorts or overdeveloped beach towns: authenticity,” Alex explains. “It’s a place to disconnect from pressure, meet people who genuinely care about their environment, and support small, community-led businesses.”

There’s plenty to do for those who want it—snorkeling, diving, jungle trekking, kayaking, village clean-ups, and weekly events. “You can also find very good restaurants and home-cooked meals here,” he adds. “There’s a large choice of activities and events happening in this little village.”

A Model for Conscious Island Living

M’Pai Bay stands out not just for what it is, but for what it represents—a different way of doing tourism. “The village offers a sustainable, people-focused model for island living and tourism,” says Alex. “It supports local employment, small-scale eco-tourism and cross-cultural collaboration.”

From environmental projects to educational initiatives, the village works together to keep its charm intact. “Every 23rd of the month, we organize a community fest to raise funds to help improve the village and maintain the beaches. It’s one of the ways we stay connected and give back.”

Cambodian Island

A Place That Stays With You

At its heart, M’Pai Bay is more than just a place to visit. It’s a place that changes you. “M’Pai Bay has this rare magic; it slows you down and makes you feel part of something real,” says Alex. “The sunsets, the kids playing on the sand, the landscapes, the simplicity—it all adds up to something that’s hard to describe but easy to feel.”

For Alex and many others who’ve made their home here, M’Pai Bay is a reminder that the best places aren’t always the most built up. Sometimes, they’re the ones that stay true to themselves.

“Cambodia has given this village a soul, and the people here give it life. That’s what makes it worth visiting.”

Cambodia’s Boutique Hotels Shine in Global Rankings – A Testament to Khmer Hospitality https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/cambodias-boutique-hotels-shine-in-global-rankings/ Thu, 08 May 2025 03:57:28 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16214

Cambodia’s hotel scene has just scored a major win on the global stage, with several locally owned properties securing top spots in TripAdvisor’s 2025 Travelers’ Choice Awards. This year’s rankings are a big deal for the Kingdom’s tourism industry, highlighting the exceptional hospitality and personalized experiences that have become hallmarks of Cambodian stays.

Leading the pack is Golden Temple Residence in Siem Reap, crowned the #1 Small & Boutique Hotel in the World. Its sister property, Golden Temple Hotel, claimed the #10 spot globally in the same category, while Golden Temple Boutique secured #9 in Asia. The recognition didn’t stop there – Golden Temple Retreat and Golden Temple Villa also made it into the global top 10, marking a significant achievement for the Temple Group.

Temple Group’s managing director, Lee Kimmey, expressed pride in the brand’s impact, noting that it’s about more than just rooms – it’s about creating unforgettable experiences. “We’re deeply proud that our properties are being recognised on this level. It’s not just about rooms – it’s about making people feel something real,” she said, reflecting the ethos that has made these hotels so popular among travelers.

Siem Reap Shines on the World Stage

While the Golden Temple properties dominated the boutique category, other Siem Reap hotels also stood out. Jaya House River Park, a serene retreat nestled along the banks of the Siem Reap River, claimed the #21 spot in the Luxury Hotel category. Known for its eco-friendly focus and stunning design, it’s a favorite for those seeking a more exclusive experience.

Another standout, Khmer Mansion Residence, earned praise for its warm, personalized service, solidifying Siem Reap’s status as a global hotspot for boutique luxury.

Phnom Penh’s Hidden Gem

Cambodia’s capital also got some love, with Palace Gate Hotel & Resort By Ehm ranked #24 in Asia. Located near the iconic Royal Palace, this property blends French colonial architecture with lush gardens, offering a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. Guests consistently highlight its impeccable service and prime location as key reasons for its top-tier ranking.

A Testament to Local Excellence

Thim Sereyvudh, director of the Siem Reap Tourism Department, pointed out that many of these award-winning properties are locally owned – a source of immense national pride. “I have travelled abroad, and in some cases, even four-star hotels in Europe do not match our level of hospitality and food service,” he said, emphasizing the unique, guest-centric approach that sets Cambodian hotels apart.

From personalized service to diverse culinary options that cater to a wide range of international tastes, Cambodian hotels have clearly found a winning formula. This recognition underscores the growing reputation of Cambodian hospitality, proving that world-class service isn’t just about luxury – it’s about making guests feel at home, wherever they come from.

More Hidden Gems to Explore

For those planning their next Cambodian getaway, there are plenty of other standout stays to consider. FCC Angkor by Avani, with its colonial charm and riverside location, and Shinta Mani Angkor, known for its striking design and social impact focus, also offer exceptional experiences in Siem Reap. Meanwhile, Raffles Hotel Le Royal in Phnom Penh remains a timeless favorite for those seeking old-world elegance in the heart of the capital.

Cambodia’s boutique hotel scene is clearly having a moment, and if these awards are anything to go by, that moment is just getting started.

From Art Dealing in London to Mindful Living in Siem Reap: Meet the Soul Behind Navutu https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/meet-the-soul-behind-navutu/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 07:07:21 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16145

Before Siem Reap’s wellness scene began to bloom, one trailblazer had already started planting the seeds. An art dealer by profession, she once navigated the whirlwind of London’s high-stakes market. Over time, a growing desire for reconnection and conscious living led her away from the gallery floors and into the heart of nature.

“I was an art dealer living in the fast-paced world of London when I felt a deep pull to reconnect with nature and live more consciously,” she explains. That journey first took her to Fiji, where a personal retreat of a few beachfront bungalows grew into Navutu Stars Fiji, a boutique, plastic-free resort praised for its sustainability and soulful atmosphere.

Eventually, that path led to Cambodia. Captivated by the country’s spiritual energy and vibrant culture, she and her team launched Navutu Dreams, the first dedicated wellness resort in Cambodia. Since opening in 2012, Navutu has become a tropical haven with 28 spacious rooms, three pools, and a wellness center surrounded by manicured jungle gardens. The resort has stayed true to its mission of promoting inner transformation through yoga, healing, meditation, and cultural connection.

In this Q&A, we explore her personal story, the evolution of Navutu, and why Cambodia continues to be one of the most exciting destinations for those seeking mindful travel.

Q: What first inspired you to create Navutu, and how has the vision evolved over time?

I was an art dealer living in the fast-paced world of London when I felt a deep pull to reconnect with nature and live more consciously. That led me to Fiji, where I originally set out to live a remote, simple life that felt raw and authentic. What began as a small personal project with just a few bungalows eventually became Navutu Stars Fiji, a boutique, plastic-free, conscious resort that earned international recognition for its commitment to sustainability and soulful hospitality.

After several fulfilling years in Fiji, we came to Cambodia and were immediately moved by the spiritual depth and vibrant culture of Siem Reap. That was the beginning of Navutu Dreams, Cambodia’s very first wellness resort. Our goal has always been to create soulful spaces where people can slow down, breathe more deeply, and grow from within.

Q: When did Navutu Dreams open, and how has it developed over the years?

Navutu Dreams opened in 2012 and has been growing ever since. What started as a vision for a tranquil retreat has become a wellness sanctuary that combines Cambodian culture, spiritual practice, and holistic wellbeing within a peaceful setting.

Our dream was never just to build a place to stay. We wanted to create a space where people could truly disconnect, recharge, and reconnect with themselves on all levels—mental, physical, and spiritual.

One of our most distinctive features is the ability to book retreats on a one-on-one basis. This was introduced in response to changes in both wellness and hospitality, allowing guests to enjoy highly personalized programs throughout the year.

Looking to the future, we are continuing to expand our offerings with new wellness programs, guest practitioners, and meaningful collaborations with the wider community.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

The most rewarding part of this work is the connection to the local community and the chance to support Cambodian talent, culture, and traditions. Our presence here is not just about hospitality. It is about giving back to something truly meaningful.

Discover more places to Eat, Drink & Stay in Cambodia

We are proud ambassadors of World Wellness Weekend, a global movement that promotes holistic wellbeing and encourages accessible wellness experiences for everyone. We see our role as helping to put Cambodia on the global wellness map.

In the coming years, we are planning to expand our wellness programs and create new transformative experiences. We are also building a new wellness center with an organic restaurant that combines nutrition, sustainability, and soul.

Q: Why should people choose Navutu? What makes it special?

The pandemic reminded people how important wellness really is. Our belief is simple. If you do not make time for wellness, you will eventually need to make time for illness. That principle guides everything we do.

We offer high-quality wellness experiences, including retreats, workshops, and personalized healing programs that help people restore balance in mind, body, and spirit. Whether someone is feeling stressed, disconnected, or just needs a break, we offer a peaceful space for reflection and renewal.

What makes us stand out is how accessible we are. Our programs are enjoyed by international travelers, expats, and Cambodians alike. Many guests come from Phnom Penh to unwind in our tranquil setting. We also offer special local rates to make wellness more inclusive for the Khmer community.

Navutu is more than a resort. It is a place where you can come home to yourself.

Q: How does Navutu support the local community and add value to Cambodian tourism?

We believe in growing alongside the local community. We support small businesses, source ingredients from nearby farmers, and look for new ways to contribute to the wellbeing of the people around us.

We proudly promote World Wellness Weekend in Cambodia and aim to highlight the country as a rising destination for holistic health and mindful living. As part of that commitment, we offer free weekly yoga classes for Khmer citizens because we believe wellness should be for everyone.

Our goal is to offer a unique and enriching experience for travelers while creating long-term value for the community. By combining wellness, culture, and connection, we are helping to diversify what Cambodia offers to the world.

Q: What keeps you in Cambodia and inspires you to continue this journey here?

Cambodia, the Kingdom of Wonder, is a truly special place to live and grow. There is a soulful energy here that is difficult to describe but easy to feel. The Khmer people are among the kindest, most spiritually grounded individuals I have ever met. Their resilience and warmth inspire me every single day.

I feel incredibly fortunate to run a business in this country. Cambodia has given me so much. Being able to give back through a space that supports wellbeing, culture, and community is a real privilege.

Design, Detail, and DJ Sets: How Hôtel KVL is Changing the City Stay https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/how-hotel-kvl-is-changing-the-city-stay/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 06:29:20 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15727
Hôtel KVL

Centrally located just a stone’s throw from Royal Palace, Hôtel KVL is setting itself apart as a go-to destination on Phnom Penh’s riverside. Since opening its doors in 2022, Hôtel KVL has offered something refreshingly different—design-forward spaces, elevated service, and a clear vision for what hospitality in Cambodia can be.

In early 2025, Vin Kebblewhite stepped in as General Manager, bringing with him over two decades of hospitality experience and a deep connection to Cambodia, which he’s called home for the past ten years.

“What drew me to Hôtel KVL was the opportunity to lead a hotel that blends contemporary design with a genuine commitment to connection—both with our guests and our city,” he explains. “Since joining, I’ve focused on building on the hotel’s already strong foundation, while elevating the experience through thoughtful detail, networking, team development, and guest-focused innovation.”

A New Vision for the Modern Business Traveller

As General Manager, Vin oversees the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the hotel, with a clear goal in mind:

“My vision as General Manager is to firmly establish Hôtel KVL as Phnom Penh’s preferred destination for the modern business traveller—where contemporary design, seamless hospitality, and meaningful experiences come together.”

Hôtel KVL

That vision is already taking shape through a series of recent developments. One key highlight has been the launch of a new entertainment lineup at UP by KVL, the rooftop bar that offers panoramic views of the Mekong. “We’ve introduced our resident DJ Lily and live acoustic music—bringing an exciting new vibe to the space,” Vin says.

KVL has also begun playing host to a range of community and professional events. “We’ve had the pleasure of hosting the AusCham AusCONNECT networking evening, and we’re looking forward to welcoming InterNations later this month.

Hôtel KVL

As proud members of several business chambers, we look forward to welcoming the wider business community into Hôtel KVL throughout 2025—and I personally look forward to attending many more community-driven events.”

Warmth, Talent, and Purpose

What keeps the energy high at KVL? For Vin, it’s all about the people and the place.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a dedicated team that shows up every day with heart and pride in what they do. Hôtel KVL is a beautiful brand to represent—not just for its design, but for the values behind it. We have an opportunity to showcase the very best of Phnom Penh and the warmth of Khmer hospitality to a global audience.”

That sense of purpose extends beyond guest experiences. “We’re committed to creating meaningful career pathways for Cambodian talent, which is something I care deeply about. We also regularly take part in CSR initiatives, giving our team opportunities to contribute to causes that matter and give back to the community in meaningful ways.”

Elevating the Phnom Penh Experience

So why choose Hôtel KVL? Vin sums it up simply:

“Hôtel KVL offers a level of experience that’s refined, design-forward, and rooted in genuine hospitality. From our river-view rooms and suites to our curated dining experiences, every element is thoughtfully considered.”

Hôtel KVL

Whether it’s a signature Wagyu Beef Phở at Skylight Restaurant, a perfectly crafted latte from The Alchemist Coffee, or cocktails under the stars at UP by KVL, attention to detail is everywhere.

The hotel also brings something unique to Phnom Penh’s business landscape. “Our co-working space, The Atom, reimagines the traditional hotel business center to meet the needs of modern business travellers, digital nomads, and local entrepreneurs,” Vin adds.

A Home for Possibility

“What keeps me here is the energy,” says Vin. “Cambodia is full of possibility. The hospitality industry here is growing, innovating, and pushing boundaries—and it’s a privilege to be a part of that. As an expat who has called Cambodia home for many years, I believe in the potential of this country, and I’m proud to be part of a property that champions local pride with international ambition.”

Hôtel KVL

From its commitment to thoughtful design and community engagement to its ambition to become the go-to destination for global travellers, Hôtel KVL is setting a new standard in Phnom Penh.

Baksaei Retreat: Meaningful Travel and Boutique Bliss in Kampot https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/baksaei-retreat/ Wed, 09 Apr 2025 06:29:23 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15567

An Interview with Meg Lowder, Founder of Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas

Located at the mouth of the Tuek Chhou River and the foot of Bokor Mountain National Park lies a peaceful sanctuary run by someone who found herself unexpectedly—and joyfully—rooted in Cambodia. We sat down with Meg Lowder, an Australian expat and the heart behind Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas, to learn how a long-term traveler turned a chance stay in Kampot into a passion-fueled business with purpose.

Hi Meg, please introduce yourself.

“I’m Meg Lowder, an Australian expat living in Cambodia for 5 years. I have over 25 years’ experience in corporate business and currently work as a freelance writer and business/communications consultant focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.”

Like many in Cambodia during the early pandemic days, Meg’s story started with a twist of fate.

“I was travelling long-term and became stranded here when the Covid-19 pandemic began, falling in love with the people and culture and settling in the gorgeous coastal town of Kampot.”

Her love for the country is tangible—not only has she made Kampot home, but she’s diving deep into the Khmer language and proudly shares, “I love sharing my passion for Cambodia with guests, along with my love of travel, having been to around 40 countries.”

Tell us about your business—Baksaei Retreat. What’s the idea behind it?

“We are a boutique 4-star guesthouse on the beautiful southern Cambodian coastline offering socially responsible holidays and meaningful travel.”

Located just 2km from downtown Kampot, Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas offers guests an intimate escape surrounded by rice fields and mountain views. Meg explains the vision: “We partner with local social enterprises, non-profits, and small businesses offering cultural experiences and activities… allowing you to explore the hidden gems of Cambodia’s southern coastline whilst giving back to the community – far from the crowds of Angkor Wat.”

The retreat features two-bedroom raised villas with fully equipped kitchens, private balconies, and what Meg lovingly calls “an oasis for nature-lovers and a haven for birds, frogs, dragonflies and more. But don’t worry, the friendly wildlife is our natural mosquito control system!”

The inspiration for Baksaei Retreat came from a combination of Meg’s commercial property background and a spontaneous visit from Australian friends.

“Some friends from country NSW in Australia spontaneously decided to come visit me in Cambodia… One lacked the confidence to travel independently and the other didn’t know where to begin with planning. I helped them understand the double currency exchange, arranged meaningful activities, and showed them all that beautiful Kampot has to offer… They were thrilled with their visit and suggested I should be doing this professionally.”

The rest, as they say, is history.

When did you launch Baksaei Retreat and what’s the dream moving forward?

“I started Baksaei Bed & Breakfast in April 2024 as a small homestay just outside of Kampot… Some months later, I started thinking about expanding the concept and began searching for a suitable location.”

By November, Meg had found a lush 3,000 sqm property near Kampot’s “International Village.” She signed a long-term lease, partnered with the Khmer owner, and began transforming the space. “In January 2025, we relocated… and rebranded to Baksaei Retreat Ricefield Villas, opening in February offering twin holiday villas set amongst the rice fields, with stunning mountain and countryside views and a private pool.”

Meg’s goal? “To create a gorgeous, quiet, green, oasis that feels both private and open to the nature around it, yet much closer to town than any other current similar offerings.” “Baksaei” means bird in Khmer language and the birdsong provides a soothing natural soundtrack.

Discover more places to Eat, Drink & Stay in Cambodia

As the gardens flourish and the rice grows with the seasons, Meg is focused on highlighting Kampot and Kep provinces as vibrant destinations in their own right, not just stopovers.

What do you love most about running Baksaei Retreat?

“Friends have always called me ‘Hostess with the Mostess’ – I love hosting people… One of the best things about this business is seeing guests’ faces when they arrive at Baksaei Retreat – the most common reaction is ‘wow!’”

Her mission is clear: “To provide service and an experience beyond expectations. I ensure guests are comfortable, have everything they need, and as much privacy as they want, but many are keen to chat about local life and ask for ideas on things to do.”

What sets Baksaei Retreat apart from other places?

“It’s not just a holiday villa, it’s an experience! The sound of the birds, frogs, palm leaves blowing in the breeze… I like to call it ‘Discovery Channel, Ricefield Edition’.”

Meg is filling a noticeable gap in Kampot’s high-end accommodation market, offering a product that appeals to locals and internationals alike. As one guest wrote: “Tastefully curated as a beautiful and aesthetic home in the Cambodian countryside that will make you feel like you have the perfect blend of western amenities with Cambodian tradition. It’s the perfect space to deeply rest, you may never want to leave.”

How does Baksaei Retreat support the local community?

“We partner with local charities and social enterprises to connect guests with meaningful activities in the area.”

Meg is also a strong advocate for promoting Cambodia’s lesser-known destinations to broader markets: “We are conducting targeted marketing to untapped markets such as Australia to bring new business into the local economy.”

And in a region where hospitality standards can vary, she’s committed to quality: “We are raising the standard of accommodation in Kampot to meet international expectations.”

What do you personally love about Cambodia and why have you stayed?

“One of the reasons I love living here is the sense of community and how everyone has ‘got each other’s back’… By referring to each other as ‘Bong’ (brother/sister), this creates a sense of comradery and friendliness I’ve not experienced in other cultures.”

A natural storyteller, Meg also weaves her experiences into writing. “I am a freelance writer and love to write about my observations of life in Cambodia – for example, you might appreciate this ‘tongue in cheek’ personal anecdote written during the pandemic, when most of the western world was panic-buying toilet paper – you’ll see I try to maintain a sense of humour!”

More than just a retreat, Baksaei is a reflection of her values. “I thrive working on professional projects where I can positively impact livelihoods and social advancement.”

A Journey in Responsible Tourism: Q&A with the founder of Babel Guesthouse and Babel Boutique Hotel, Katrine Solhaug https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/qa-with-the-founder-of-babel-hotel-katrine-solhaug/ Mon, 17 Mar 2025 07:44:03 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14985
 Babel

Always on the look out for movers and shakers in the Kingdom, Cambodia Lifestyle recently learned of Katrine’s amazing story and simply had to find out more!

After you have read below, be sure to find out more about Babel here!

Q: Katrine, tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to Cambodia!

I’m Katrine Solhaug, originally from Norway. I’ve lived in Cambodia for 17 years with my Norwegian husband, Simen Julner, and our two daughters, who are now seven and five years old. I initially came to Cambodia to run another guesthouse similar to Babel Guesthouse. With my background in social work, I quickly realized that managing a hotel in Cambodia involved a lot of social impact—creating opportunities for locals, promoting responsible tourism, and making a tangible difference in the community.

I had lived in seven different countries across Latin America and Africa and traveled to over 50, but something about Cambodia was different. Here, what you do actually makes a difference. The focus on responsible tourism in Siem Reap was something I felt even universities in Norway could learn from.

 Babel

Q: You own two hotels in Siem Reap. Can you tell us more about Babel Guesthouse and Babel Boutique Hotel?

We opened Babel Guesthouse in 2008, and it quickly became known for its strong commitment to responsible tourism and environmental sustainability. We provide good working conditions, healthcare, and training for our 28 staff members. We also run an education program that offers higher education opportunities for staff who want to study, including our 17 tuk-tuk drivers, who are an integral part of our Babel family.

We collaborate with educational institutions such as Build Bright University, The University of South-East Asia, and ACE School, and we have strong ties with renowned hospitality training schools like Spoons, Sala Bai, and Ecole d’Hotellerie Paul Dubrule. We also educate our staff and tuk-tuk drivers on responsible tourism, and our drivers are the only ones in Siem Reap trained in Child Safe policies by Friends International.

Discover Something Different in Cambodia

Babel Boutique Hotel is our second venture, which offers a higher standard of accommodation while maintaining the same responsible tourism values. It has only nine rooms, a pool, and features art by Tamara Venn, with part of the profits going to ACCB, an organization working with endangered species. This hotel was even mentioned in the New York Times, which helped bring it global recognition.

Q: Sustainability is clearly a major focus for you. Can you share some of the eco-friendly initiatives at Babel?

In 2018, we opened Cambodia’s first Eco Shop and Refill Station in our lobby. We were frustrated by tourists complaining about plastic pollution while continuing to use plastic bottles and bags themselves. So, we created a shop offering plastic-free alternatives for travelers. We sell soaps, mosquito spray, and oils on a refill basis—guests can bring their own containers and purchase only what they need.

We stopped selling plastic bottles in our restaurant nearly a decade ago and were early advocates of the Refill Not Landfill campaign. We also organize regular garbage cleanups, involving our staff, tuk-tuk drivers, and even other businesses in Siem Reap.

 Babel

Q: Your business also prioritizes community support. How do you ensure your guests contribute positively to the local economy?

We recommend restaurants, shops, and tours that align with our responsible tourism values. We’ve created a guidebook placed in every room that highlights ethical businesses where guests can eat, shop, and visit while giving back to the community.

Discover more Arts & Culture in Cambodia

Our guesthouse has also become a hub for group tours from around the world, with a strong focus on responsible travel. These guests get to experience Siem Reap in a way that benefits both the local people and the environment.

Q: How did COVID-19 impact your business, and how did you overcome the challenges?

When COVID hit, we faced a crisis. We had to support 30 staff members and tuk-tuk drivers with no income coming in. We launched a massive fundraising campaign, raising $40,000 to keep things afloat for a year. We created videos to show what was happening on the ground in Cambodia and even introduced ‘virtual tours’—people paid for me to go on tours with our drivers and send them personalized videos. It was a lot of work, but we just survived.

At the same time, the Cambodian government started a massive road renovation project, which took five meters from our garden. We had to tear everything down and rebuild. Fortunately, with the funds from our campaign, we could employ our own staff and tuk-tuk drivers to do the reconstruction. Now, everything at Babel is built by our own team.

Q: It sounds like you had to innovate a lot during that time. How did your family-friendly approach evolve?

During COVID, we also had to create a nursery and school on-site for our children and the children of our staff and tuk-tuk drivers. When we reopened, we had so many play areas and eco-friendly toys that we unexpectedly became a favorite among traveling families. This turned into an entirely new market for us, and we now have a strong base of family travelers year-round.

Q: What’s next for you? You mentioned a new project in Nesat Village.

Yes! We recently bought land in Nesat Village, down south in Cambodia, where we built Cambodia’s first Aircrete building during a workshop with world-famous Domegaia. We are always looking for new ways to integrate sustainability into our work, and this is just the beginning of our next big adventure.

Q: What advice would you give to travelers who want to make a positive impact while visiting Cambodia?

Be mindful of where you spend your money. Choose hotels, restaurants, and tours that are committed to ethical practices. Reduce your plastic consumption by using refill stations and reusable items. Most importantly, be respectful of the culture and understand that tourism, when done right, can create a lasting, positive impact on local communities.

At Babel, we always say that responsible tourism isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of travel. And we are proud to be part of that movement.

Expat Favourites: Sundown Social Club New Owners Set To Give The Classic Bar A Fresh Twist https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/sundown-social-club/ Tue, 31 Dec 2024 07:03:49 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14247

Sitting atop the popular Russian Market in TTP, Sundown Social Club has long been a solid spot to perch and enjoy the view over south Phnom Penh.

With second-to-none sunsets and a laid-back atmosphere to boot, it’s no surprise this venue holds a special place in the hearts of locals, expats and visitors alike.

Recently, this place has undergone a bit of a transformation and is under the stewardship of two long-term expats. Naturally, Cambodia Lifestyle had to find out more so we sat down with the new owners for a chinwag.

A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces

“Although the ownership is new, the team behind Sundown Social Club remains the same.,” they said.

“Led by the talented Sophorn, the bar and restaurant manager, the staff ensure that the venue continues to offer the same top-notch service.”

The new owners are instead focusing on enhancing the menu, organizing dynamic events, and implementing upgrades to maintain its reputation as a go-to destination.

“We refreshed the plants and replaced our signs, and we are planning further updates in the coming months,” they share.

“Our social media expert, Igor, is handling our marketing efforts. You might have noticed updates to our Instagram, Facebook page, and logos, as well as changes in how we promote events—more updates are on the way. Make sure to give us a follow!”

The Dream and the Journey

Sundown Social Club has been a community favorite for seven years and the new owners aren’t trying to reinvent the wheel.

“We aim to keep it a great spot for delicious food, refreshing drinks, and unforgettable music in Phnom Penh.”

Indeed, they’ve already hosted their first event under the new management, a lively gathering that showcased the venue’s potential as a late-night destination for drinks and dancing (which one member of Cambodia Lifestyle may have attended!).

“Looking ahead, guests can look forward to regular DJ nights every Friday and exciting monthly special events. We’d love to team up with local food, drink, and business brands to support each other, so please feel free to reach out!”

What Makes Sundown Social Club Unique?

With its unmatched rooftop location overlooking the lively Russian Market, Sundown Social Club offers an experience like no other. Guests can soak in the vibrant energy of the market below while watching the sun dip below the horizon. “The rooftop atmosphere allows guests to watch the lively market below while enjoying a beautiful sunset; it truly is hard to beat!”

Supporting the Local Community

Sundown Social Club takes pride in its commitment to sustainability and supporting local businesses. Nearly all their produce is sourced locally, and they are eager to collaborate with other enterprises in the area, particularly in sustainability initiatives. “If anyone is interested in discussing potential partnerships or has ideas for collaboration, please feel free to reach out!”

Additionally, the club offers a platform for local artists to perform in a relaxed setting, fostering the growth of Cambodia’s vibrant music scene.

A Labor of Love

The owners’ connection to Cambodia shines through in their dedication to Sundown Social Club.

“We have been here for years, and we’re not going anywhere. Starting this new adventure demonstrates our love for Cambodia and showcases it as a great place for entrepreneurship and creativity. We hope to contribute to that vibrant atmosphere by creating a fun little spot in the Russian Market!”

Kampot: Where To Stay? https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/kampot-where-to-stay/ Mon, 23 Dec 2024 08:02:12 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14156

Kampot offers an exciting mix of accommodations, from budget-friendly backpacker hostels to charming boutique stays and serene riverside retreats. Whether you’re here to explore the town, soak up the countryside, or simply relax by the river, there’s something for everyone. Let’s dive into the best places to stay and how to make the most of your Kampot experience.

If you’re a backpacker, the center of Kampot is home to some excellent hostels, offering both dorms and private rooms. One standout is Kool Kampot, located just ten minutes from the town center. Sitting right by the river, this hostel combines comfort and tranquility with easy access to Kampot’s lively heart. It’s the perfect pick for travelers wanting a relaxed riverside vibe with all the conveniences of town nearby. For those who love a good hostel experience, Monkey Republic is another great option. Known for its exceptionally comfortable dorm beds, complete with privacy curtains, power outlets, and air-conditioning, it’s a top choice for backpackers. They also offer private rooms and have a fantastic on-site bar and restaurant that serves delicious vegan and vegetarian-friendly dishes alongside great drinks deals.

For couples or those looking to splash out a bit, Kampot’s boutique guesthouses and hotels are a real treat. BARACA Guesthouse is a local favorite, blending minimalist design with stylish touches and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It’s also home to a fantastic bar serving some of the best G&Ts in Kampot—what’s not to love? Prices here range from $32 to $50 per night, offering great value for such a chic spot. Another gem is the Hotel Old Cinema, a beautifully restored art-deco building that exudes charm and character. It’s a perfect choice for travelers who want a memorable stay and don’t mind loosening the purse strings for a couple of nights. The hotel even has a pool for a refreshing dip after a day of exploring.

For a more unique and quirky option, Candy Pepper combines boutique guesthouse vibes with an artisan feel. It’s small, with just three rooms, so booking ahead is essential. This fun spot is also known for its rum bar, adding a bit of extra flavor to your Kampot experience. If modern comforts and a pool are more your style, Pippali is an excellent choice. Located a short 10–15 minute walk from the center of Kampot, this boutique hotel offers a sleek, contemporary design and top-notch facilities, making it ideal for those who appreciate a little luxury. For a more traditional guesthouse experience, Vibola comes highly recommended for its classic style and warm hospitality.

If you prefer the tranquility of the countryside, Kampot also boasts several riverside hostels and resorts just outside the town. These spots offer a peaceful escape, with the added bonus of river activities like kayaking and swimming. Options like Fish Island Bungalows, Yellow Sun Hostel, and Kampot Cabana let you enjoy the serene beauty of the river while keeping the lively town center just a short tuk-tuk ride away.
