Cambodian Island

On the northern tip of Koh Rong Sanloem lies a village that feels like a world apart. M’Pai Bay—also known as Village 23—isn’t your typical island destination. It’s a living, breathing community where Khmer fishing families and international residents coexist, bound by a love of nature, simplicity, and sustainable living.

For Alex, owner of the beachfront spot MY WAY, it’s this mix that makes the place so special. “M’Pai Bay has been a functioning village for decades, but it’s only in the past 10 years that it’s become more known as a destination,” he says. “The dream is to preserve the authenticity of the village while allowing it to evolve with care.”

A Slower Rhythm of Life

Tourism has arrived gently in M’Pai Bay, and with it, a sense of balance many destinations lose. “The best thing about M’Pai Bay is its nature—the turquoise, crystal-clear sea, the rich marine life, the soft beaches and the peaceful jungle that surrounds the village,” says Alex. “It’s a place where people smile easily and live simply. There’s a strong sense of contentment here. People are happy with not much.”

That simplicity creates a kind of peace. “As a visitor or new resident, you feel safe, welcome and at home almost instantly.”

Cambodian Island

A Real Community, Not Just a Resort

Unlike heavily developed beach towns, M’Pai Bay has held onto something rare—soul. “People should visit because it offers something you won’t find in big resorts or overdeveloped beach towns: authenticity,” Alex explains. “It’s a place to disconnect from pressure, meet people who genuinely care about their environment, and support small, community-led businesses.”

There’s plenty to do for those who want it—snorkeling, diving, jungle trekking, kayaking, village clean-ups, and weekly events. “You can also find very good restaurants and home-cooked meals here,” he adds. “There’s a large choice of activities and events happening in this little village.”

A Model for Conscious Island Living

M’Pai Bay stands out not just for what it is, but for what it represents—a different way of doing tourism. “The village offers a sustainable, people-focused model for island living and tourism,” says Alex. “It supports local employment, small-scale eco-tourism and cross-cultural collaboration.”

From environmental projects to educational initiatives, the village works together to keep its charm intact. “Every 23rd of the month, we organize a community fest to raise funds to help improve the village and maintain the beaches. It’s one of the ways we stay connected and give back.”

Cambodian Island

A Place That Stays With You

At its heart, M’Pai Bay is more than just a place to visit. It’s a place that changes you. “M’Pai Bay has this rare magic; it slows you down and makes you feel part of something real,” says Alex. “The sunsets, the kids playing on the sand, the landscapes, the simplicity—it all adds up to something that’s hard to describe but easy to feel.”

For Alex and many others who’ve made their home here, M’Pai Bay is a reminder that the best places aren’t always the most built up. Sometimes, they’re the ones that stay true to themselves.

“Cambodia has given this village a soul, and the people here give it life. That’s what makes it worth visiting.”

Design, Detail, and DJ Sets: How Hôtel KVL is Changing the City Stay https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/how-hotel-kvl-is-changing-the-city-stay/ Fri, 18 Apr 2025 06:29:20 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15727
Hôtel KVL

Centrally located just a stone’s throw from Royal Palace, Hôtel KVL is setting itself apart as a go-to destination on Phnom Penh’s riverside. Since opening its doors in 2022, Hôtel KVL has offered something refreshingly different—design-forward spaces, elevated service, and a clear vision for what hospitality in Cambodia can be.

In early 2025, Vin Kebblewhite stepped in as General Manager, bringing with him over two decades of hospitality experience and a deep connection to Cambodia, which he’s called home for the past ten years.

“What drew me to Hôtel KVL was the opportunity to lead a hotel that blends contemporary design with a genuine commitment to connection—both with our guests and our city,” he explains. “Since joining, I’ve focused on building on the hotel’s already strong foundation, while elevating the experience through thoughtful detail, networking, team development, and guest-focused innovation.”

A New Vision for the Modern Business Traveller

As General Manager, Vin oversees the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the hotel, with a clear goal in mind:

“My vision as General Manager is to firmly establish Hôtel KVL as Phnom Penh’s preferred destination for the modern business traveller—where contemporary design, seamless hospitality, and meaningful experiences come together.”

Hôtel KVL

That vision is already taking shape through a series of recent developments. One key highlight has been the launch of a new entertainment lineup at UP by KVL, the rooftop bar that offers panoramic views of the Mekong. “We’ve introduced our resident DJ Lily and live acoustic music—bringing an exciting new vibe to the space,” Vin says.

KVL has also begun playing host to a range of community and professional events. “We’ve had the pleasure of hosting the AusCham AusCONNECT networking evening, and we’re looking forward to welcoming InterNations later this month.

Hôtel KVL

As proud members of several business chambers, we look forward to welcoming the wider business community into Hôtel KVL throughout 2025—and I personally look forward to attending many more community-driven events.”

Warmth, Talent, and Purpose

What keeps the energy high at KVL? For Vin, it’s all about the people and the place.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to lead a dedicated team that shows up every day with heart and pride in what they do. Hôtel KVL is a beautiful brand to represent—not just for its design, but for the values behind it. We have an opportunity to showcase the very best of Phnom Penh and the warmth of Khmer hospitality to a global audience.”

That sense of purpose extends beyond guest experiences. “We’re committed to creating meaningful career pathways for Cambodian talent, which is something I care deeply about. We also regularly take part in CSR initiatives, giving our team opportunities to contribute to causes that matter and give back to the community in meaningful ways.”

Elevating the Phnom Penh Experience

So why choose Hôtel KVL? Vin sums it up simply:

“Hôtel KVL offers a level of experience that’s refined, design-forward, and rooted in genuine hospitality. From our river-view rooms and suites to our curated dining experiences, every element is thoughtfully considered.”

Hôtel KVL

Whether it’s a signature Wagyu Beef Phở at Skylight Restaurant, a perfectly crafted latte from The Alchemist Coffee, or cocktails under the stars at UP by KVL, attention to detail is everywhere.

The hotel also brings something unique to Phnom Penh’s business landscape. “Our co-working space, The Atom, reimagines the traditional hotel business center to meet the needs of modern business travellers, digital nomads, and local entrepreneurs,” Vin adds.

A Home for Possibility

“What keeps me here is the energy,” says Vin. “Cambodia is full of possibility. The hospitality industry here is growing, innovating, and pushing boundaries—and it’s a privilege to be a part of that. As an expat who has called Cambodia home for many years, I believe in the potential of this country, and I’m proud to be part of a property that champions local pride with international ambition.”

Hôtel KVL

From its commitment to thoughtful design and community engagement to its ambition to become the go-to destination for global travellers, Hôtel KVL is setting a new standard in Phnom Penh.

Dengue Fever

The wait is over! Legendary Cambodian-American rock band Dengue Fever is set to make a triumphant return to the Kingdom for the first time since 2016. On Friday, March 21, 2025, fans will get the chance to experience the band’s infectious blend of psychedelic rock and Khmer musical influences at the open-air Chew & Bash rooftop on Phnom Penh Island Club, Koh Pich. This highly anticipated concert is expected to be one of the biggest music events of the year, and if you love live music, you won’t want to miss it!

A Homecoming for Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever has deep roots in Cambodia. The Los Angeles-based band, led by Khmer singer Chhom Nimol, draws heavily from the golden era of Cambodian rock from the 1960s and ‘70s. Their fusion of vintage Khmer pop with garage rock, surf, and world music has earned them a dedicated global following.

Discover Something Different in Cambodia

Keyboardist Ethan Holtzman recalls his first visit to Cambodia in 1998, where he discovered the unique blend of western psychedelic sounds with traditional Khmer music, a combination that would later inspire the formation of Dengue Fever. “Our starting point was this incredible music,” he explained, “and we’ve continued to build on it, creating our own unique sound.”

The band’s bassist, Senon Williams, reminisced about their early days performing in Phnom Penh. “Phnom Penh was the first place that Dengue Fever played outside of the U.S. It always feels like a homecoming when we return.”

A Stacked Lineup Featuring Japan Guitar Shop & DJ Larry Zinc

Dengue Fever

Joining Dengue Fever on this unforgettable night is Phnom Penh’s very own Japan Guitar Shop. Known for their dynamic blend of rock, blues, and hip-hop, the band is thrilled to share the stage with Dengue Fever. “One of our bandmates, Colin, was a fan of Dengue Fever long before he moved to Cambodia. We share many of the same musical influences, and getting to perform with them is a real honor,” the band shared. Japan Guitar Shop’s high-energy performance will set the stage for an electrifying night.

“Previously we always held this event on a Monday morning while showing the live Oscars,” said Arthur. “But this year the Academy moved up the time of the show, so it wasn’t realistic to continue this way. We will have the same format with games and prizes; the only difference is that we will show clips of the Oscars highlights.”

About the Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee

The Cambodia Oscar Selection Committee was originally part of the Film Cambodia Organization (FCO), which became a local NGO registered with the Ministry of Interior on January 2, 2008. It was conceived in March 2006 when Mariam Arthur approached Cambodia’s Department of Cinema and Cultural Diffusion about helping develop the Khmer film industry.

Arthur returned to the United States to spend a year researching and planning a strategy. She came back to Phnom Penh in April 2007 and began meeting both Khmer and foreign film professionals, such as those at Bophana Audiovisual Center, Hanuman Films, and Hang Meas, as well as government officials. The first newsletter, Mise en Scene, was published in June 2007.

In 2024, COSC applied for recognition as its own local NGO with President Cecile Malterre, Vice President Kem Sokhak, Technician In Peth, and Administrator Mariam Arthur.

This event is more than just a party—it’s a celebration of Cambodia’s growing film industry and the creative minds working to bring local stories to the world stage. So, gather your friends, dress to impress, and raise a glass to cinema at The Birdcage Boutique this Friday night.

Spice Cartel: The Legacy of South Indian Cuisine Brought To Phnom Penh https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/spice-cartel-the-legacy-of-south-indian-cuisine/ Fri, 24 Jan 2025 08:30:30 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14498

Phnom Penh’s food scene is ever-evolving, yet for all its variety, one flavor has remained conspicuously absent—authentic South Indian cuisine. Spice Cartel, a home kitchen in the city, is changing that by introducing the complex and distinctive tastes of southern India to a growing audience of expatriates, locals, and tourists.

Specializing in dishes such as dosa, idli, and biriyani, Spice Cartel was founded to address a noticeable gap in the city’s culinary landscape, where Indian food offerings lean heavily toward North Indian and fusion fare. With its focus on authenticity, quality, and accessibility, the business offers a unique alternative for those looking to explore the flavors of South India.

A Timely Venture

Spice Cartel is a recent initiative, started as a home kitchen to test the market’s appetite for its offerings. “The dream is to expand into a full-fledged restaurant, becoming Phnom Penh’s go-to destination for South Indian cuisine,” the founder explains.

Currently, the menu is limited, but there are ambitious plans to grow. “We plan to expand it in the future to include a wider variety of dishes,” they add. The timing feels right, with the city’s culinary scene diversifying and an absence of direct competition in this niche. The founder’s expertise in traditional recipes, paired with a passion for South Indian food, provides a strong foundation for the venture.

What Makes Spice Cartel Special

“The business’s uniqueness lies in its authenticity,” says the founder, highlighting that the recipes are deeply personal, passed down through generations and perfected over decades. Dishes are prepared using high-quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods, ensuring that each meal retains its original flavor and character.

This commitment to tradition sets Spice Cartel apart, but so does its practicality. The online-first model allows customers to order from the comfort of their homes, with delivery soon available on popular platforms like Nham24 and Foodpanda. “The service is convenient, and the affordable prices make it accessible,” they note, ensuring that more people can experience these carefully crafted dishes.

A Contribution to Phnom Penh

Introducing authentic South Indian food doesn’t just benefit diners. “By introducing authentic South Indian cuisine, Spice Cartel enriches the cultural diversity of Phnom Penh’s food scene,” the founder says. It offers locals and visitors alike a chance to engage with a lesser-known aspect of Indian culture, broadening the city’s culinary repertoire.

Moreover, the business supports local food delivery platforms and has the potential to create jobs as it grows. The founder envisions scaling up to catering services and packaged foods in the future, contributing further to the city’s economy and gastronomic identity.
