Smoke on the Water

As the sun dips below the Phnom Penh skyline this May, a new event is set to make waves along the Mekong – Smoke on the Water. This twilight charity cruise, followed by an open-air afterparty, promises a night of indulgence, community, and meaningful support for a great cause.

Hosted by Cigar Comprandes Cambodia, Smoke on the Water blends the art of fine cigars, premium whisky, and live music into a unique riverside experience, all while raising funds to support the children of Sunrise Cambodia.

An Evening on the Mekong

The night begins aboard the Mekong Magic Cruise, a spacious, two-deck vessel that offers sweeping views of Phnom Penh’s twinkling skyline as it glides along the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. Guests will be welcomed with a glass of Nikka Whisky, courtesy of Moonshine, as they step aboard at Koh Pich. For the first 75 guests, the evening includes a complimentary Confidenciaal cigar by Bertie’s, setting the tone for an evening of refined indulgence.

As the cruise gently makes its way down the river, live music will provide the perfect backdrop to the city’s glittering lights, creating a relaxed but festive atmosphere. Alongside the music, guests can savor a selection of tapas from Compass Mexican and Mekong Fine Foods, ensuring that the night’s pleasures extend beyond just the smoke and spirits.

From the Water to the Dance Floor

After the cruise, the night continues at Chew & Bash, one of Phnom Penh’s newest riverside hangouts, located at the lively Coconut Park. Known for its laid-back vibe and vibrant social scene, Chew & Bash offers the perfect setting for the event’s afterparty. Guests can enjoy Mediterranean bites from Hummus House, more top-shelf pours from Botanico, and a high-energy set from DJ Dr. WahWah, known for his eclectic mixes that keep the dance floor moving long into the night.

A Night for a Cause

While the focus is on indulgence and connection, the heart of Smoke on the Water lies in its charitable mission. All proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing a piano for the children of Sunrise Cambodia, adding a powerful, lasting note of generosity to the evening.

Dancing Across Cultures: How DJ Lily Is Changing Phnom Penh’s Soundtrack https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/dj-lily-is-changing-phnom-penhs-soundtrack/ Mon, 05 May 2025 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16191

Something special happened at our recent InterNations rooftop event at Hotel KVL. As the sun dipped over the Tonle Sap and the cocktails flowed, a wave of energy swept through the crowd, and at the centre of it was DJ Lily. With her signature blend of Latin rhythms, global beats, and infectious charisma, she turned a casual networking night into a celebration of movement, culture, and connection. We knew we had to find out more.

So, we sat down with DJ Lily, Phnom Penh’s rising musical force, to learn how she ended up spinning on Cambodian rooftops, what drives her unique style, and why music can be a bridge between people from all walks of life.

Hey Lily, tell us a bit about yourself — how did you end up behind the decks?

I’m DJ Lily, originally from Latin America, and music has always been a huge part of my life. I became a DJ because I wanted to share joy, energy, and culture — to create moments people remember. I love mixing genres that get people moving, especially reggaeton, salsa, bachata, afrobeats, and international pop. It’s not just about playing songs. I want people to feel something when I play.

Discover More Events In Cambodia

How did your Cambodia DJ journey start?

“I’ve been DJing for around 8 years, but I started my project in Cambodia in 2022 when I became the resident DJ at Up by KVL — such a beautiful rooftop and great team. Since then, I’ve played at festivals in Thailand and Malaysia, and collaborated with Cambodian artists. The dream now is to keep growing, keep exploring, and create more events that bring different cultures together through music.”

Indeed, Lily doesn’t just play sets — she curates experiences. Each performance is tailored to the mood, crowd, and venue, and her ability to read a room is one of the reasons she’s getting booked more and more across the region.

What do you love most about DJing here in Cambodia?

When I play music and people start to smile, dance, and let go — that’s everything. There’s something about Cambodia that makes people open to new vibes. I’ve found such a warm, welcoming atmosphere here, and I always try to return that energy. Every set is a chance to connect and celebrate something bigger than just sound.

What makes your sets different from others? Why should someone come see you play or book you?

I bring something you might not find easily in Phnom Penh — a mix of Latin flavor and global energy. I adapt to the space and audience, but the essence is always high-energy, joyful, and inclusive. I don’t just want people to dance; I want them to feel like they’ve travelled somewhere else, even just for a night.

Discover more places to Eat, Drink & Stay in Cambodia

How do you see your music contributing to the local scene?

I think I offer something fresh. Many locals and expats are looking for more cultural variety in the nightlife scene. I try to help diversify what’s out there — collaborating with artists, organising themed nights, and just being part of that growing wave of creative energy. Music is a universal language, and I love using it to create community here.

And finally… what keeps you in Cambodia? What do you love most about living here?

Honestly, the kindness. The people, the energy — there’s a vibe here that feels very real. I came just to explore, but I stayed because I fell in love with the country and the culture. Cambodia gave me the space to grow and express myself, and I’m excited for what’s next.

From Art Dealing in London to Mindful Living in Siem Reap: Meet the Soul Behind Navutu https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/meet-the-soul-behind-navutu/ Wed, 30 Apr 2025 07:07:21 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16145

Before Siem Reap’s wellness scene began to bloom, one trailblazer had already started planting the seeds. An art dealer by profession, she once navigated the whirlwind of London’s high-stakes market. Over time, a growing desire for reconnection and conscious living led her away from the gallery floors and into the heart of nature.

“I was an art dealer living in the fast-paced world of London when I felt a deep pull to reconnect with nature and live more consciously,” she explains. That journey first took her to Fiji, where a personal retreat of a few beachfront bungalows grew into Navutu Stars Fiji, a boutique, plastic-free resort praised for its sustainability and soulful atmosphere.

Eventually, that path led to Cambodia. Captivated by the country’s spiritual energy and vibrant culture, she and her team launched Navutu Dreams, the first dedicated wellness resort in Cambodia. Since opening in 2012, Navutu has become a tropical haven with 28 spacious rooms, three pools, and a wellness center surrounded by manicured jungle gardens. The resort has stayed true to its mission of promoting inner transformation through yoga, healing, meditation, and cultural connection.

In this Q&A, we explore her personal story, the evolution of Navutu, and why Cambodia continues to be one of the most exciting destinations for those seeking mindful travel.

Q: What first inspired you to create Navutu, and how has the vision evolved over time?

I was an art dealer living in the fast-paced world of London when I felt a deep pull to reconnect with nature and live more consciously. That led me to Fiji, where I originally set out to live a remote, simple life that felt raw and authentic. What began as a small personal project with just a few bungalows eventually became Navutu Stars Fiji, a boutique, plastic-free, conscious resort that earned international recognition for its commitment to sustainability and soulful hospitality.

After several fulfilling years in Fiji, we came to Cambodia and were immediately moved by the spiritual depth and vibrant culture of Siem Reap. That was the beginning of Navutu Dreams, Cambodia’s very first wellness resort. Our goal has always been to create soulful spaces where people can slow down, breathe more deeply, and grow from within.

Q: When did Navutu Dreams open, and how has it developed over the years?

Navutu Dreams opened in 2012 and has been growing ever since. What started as a vision for a tranquil retreat has become a wellness sanctuary that combines Cambodian culture, spiritual practice, and holistic wellbeing within a peaceful setting.

Our dream was never just to build a place to stay. We wanted to create a space where people could truly disconnect, recharge, and reconnect with themselves on all levels—mental, physical, and spiritual.

One of our most distinctive features is the ability to book retreats on a one-on-one basis. This was introduced in response to changes in both wellness and hospitality, allowing guests to enjoy highly personalized programs throughout the year.

Looking to the future, we are continuing to expand our offerings with new wellness programs, guest practitioners, and meaningful collaborations with the wider community.

Q: What do you love most about what you do?

The most rewarding part of this work is the connection to the local community and the chance to support Cambodian talent, culture, and traditions. Our presence here is not just about hospitality. It is about giving back to something truly meaningful.

We are proud ambassadors of World Wellness Weekend, a global movement that promotes holistic wellbeing and encourages accessible wellness experiences for everyone. We see our role as helping to put Cambodia on the global wellness map.

In the coming years, we are planning to expand our wellness programs and create new transformative experiences. We are also building a new wellness center with an organic restaurant that combines nutrition, sustainability, and soul.

Q: Why should people choose Navutu? What makes it special?

The pandemic reminded people how important wellness really is. Our belief is simple. If you do not make time for wellness, you will eventually need to make time for illness. That principle guides everything we do.

We offer high-quality wellness experiences, including retreats, workshops, and personalized healing programs that help people restore balance in mind, body, and spirit. Whether someone is feeling stressed, disconnected, or just needs a break, we offer a peaceful space for reflection and renewal.

What makes us stand out is how accessible we are. Our programs are enjoyed by international travelers, expats, and Cambodians alike. Many guests come from Phnom Penh to unwind in our tranquil setting. We also offer special local rates to make wellness more inclusive for the Khmer community.

Navutu is more than a resort. It is a place where you can come home to yourself.

Q: How does Navutu support the local community and add value to Cambodian tourism?

We believe in growing alongside the local community. We support small businesses, source ingredients from nearby farmers, and look for new ways to contribute to the wellbeing of the people around us.

We proudly promote World Wellness Weekend in Cambodia and aim to highlight the country as a rising destination for holistic health and mindful living. As part of that commitment, we offer free weekly yoga classes for Khmer citizens because we believe wellness should be for everyone.

Our goal is to offer a unique and enriching experience for travelers while creating long-term value for the community. By combining wellness, culture, and connection, we are helping to diversify what Cambodia offers to the world.

Q: What keeps you in Cambodia and inspires you to continue this journey here?

Cambodia, the Kingdom of Wonder, is a truly special place to live and grow. There is a soulful energy here that is difficult to describe but easy to feel. The Khmer people are among the kindest, most spiritually grounded individuals I have ever met. Their resilience and warmth inspire me every single day.

I feel incredibly fortunate to run a business in this country. Cambodia has given me so much. Being able to give back through a space that supports wellbeing, culture, and community is a real privilege.

Phnom Penh’s Newest Escape Room: ANNO89 Offers a New Kind of Fun https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/phnom-penhs-newest-escape-room/ Tue, 29 Apr 2025 07:10:20 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16142

If you’re looking for something fresh, fun, and mentally engaging to do in Phnom Penh, ANNO89 Escape Games might be just what the city has been missing. Founded by Andy, this new venture reintroduces the capital to escape room experiences with a modern twist and thoughtful design.

“I run an escape room in Phnom Penh. When I started, there was nothing like it in the city,” Andy explains. “I wanted to bring a fun, interactive experience that challenges people and brings them together — something completely different from the usual routine.”

Four Months In and Just Getting Started

“We’ve been open for four months now,” says Andy. “The dream is to open more rooms and possibly more locations in the future. There’s nothing quite like this in the city, so I felt it was the right time and place to bring something different to the scene.”

The format is simple but effective: You and your team are placed in a themed room with one goal – escape before the clock runs out. Along the way, you’ll face puzzles, clues, and challenges that require teamwork and creative thinking.

A Rare Chance to Be Present

“The best part is watching people come out of the game smiling, laughing, and full of energy,” Andy says. “It’s fun to observe how different teams approach the challenges and how people work together. I’ve learned a lot about behavior and teamwork through this.”

But beyond the entertainment, ANNO89 gives players something increasingly rare: the opportunity to disconnect from their phones and reconnect with the moment.

“It’s a great team-building activity, lots of fun, and it gives your brain a workout. Plus, it’s one of the few experiences where you really put your phone down and stay fully present for an hour — and you walk away with a lasting memory.”

Filling a Gap in the City’s Social Life

Asked why this business matters to Phnom Penh, Andy is clear: “It fills a unique gap between just working and the usual options of going out to eat or drink. This offers something new — a different kind of fun that’s active, social, and mentally engaging.”

Andy’s ambitions extend beyond puzzles and clues. “My favorite thing about Cambodia is definitely the people — they’re kind, respectful, and always welcoming. If I can grow this business, I’d love to invest more into social projects here in Phnom Penh to give something back to the community.”

Pass It On Phnom Penh: Tin Hat To Host Charity Event to Support the Sorn Foundation https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/tin-hat-to-host-charity-event-to-support-the-sorn-foundation/ Mon, 28 Apr 2025 08:29:35 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16083

A community-led charity event with a creative twist is set to take place on Saturday, May 3rd at The Tin Hat in Toul Tom Poung, all in support of the Sorn Foundation, a Cambodian non-profit working to empower women and uplift vulnerable families.

The event is more than just a donation drive, it’s a chance for Phnom Penh residents to give back, connect, and make a real impact. With the Sorn Foundation at the heart of the initiative, all funds raised will go directly to supporting their work in Cambodia.

Give, Grab a Beer, and Win

From now until May 3rd, locals are encouraged to drop off gently-used or spare clothes, books, gadgets, and household goods at The Tin Hat. On the big day, the best donations will be featured in a pop-up charity sale from 2:30–5:30PM, with 100% of proceeds going to the Sorn Foundation. To sweeten the deal, anyone who donates a bag on the day receives a free beer (while stocks last), and the donor of the highest-selling item wins a special prize and a shoutout.

The evening continues with a lively $2 charity quiz with a mix of rounds covering geography, lyrics, Cambodian trivia, and even a comedy storytelling round.

Tom Starkey, Strategic Partnerships Advisor for the Sorn Foundation, said, “The Sorn Foundation is doing vital grassroots work supporting women and children in rural Cambodia, and this event is about getting the wider Phnom Penh community involved. Whether you’re donating a bag, coming for the quiz, or just spreading the word, it all helps.”

Tom, who is also the founder of Cambodia Lifestyle, added that his company will be helping to promote the event on their platform and sponsoring a prize on the night.

The Sorn Foundation: Changing Lives Through Education

Founded by Nicola Clements from the UK and Somphors Sorn from Cambodia, the Sorn Foundation is a grassroots charity dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty and social exclusion in rural Cambodia. Based in Takeo Province, the foundation provides free education to children, offering English and Khmer lessons, life skills, and a safe space to grow. Their mission is to empower individuals with the tools they need to build a better future through education and community development programs.

What began as Somphors teaching local children under a tree has evolved into a fully registered school, built from the ground up with the help of dedicated supporters. The foundation has taught over 70 children, provided school supplies, food, and internet access, and supported local students in pursuing higher education.

In addition to education, the Sorn Foundation focuses on reducing violence against women through grassroots education and training initiatives. Programs include women’s rights awareness, parenting support, and sustainable living projects such as vegetable growing and livestock rearing.

A Venue With Character: The Tin Hat

Located in the popular Toul Tom Poung area, The Tin Hat is known for its laid-back charm and community spirit. It’s not just a bar, it’s also home to an in-house barber salon, and hosts everything from live music nights, weekend BBQS and curated events that support good causes.

InterNations Networking Event at Hotel KVL

Phnom Penh’s expat community is in for a treat as InterNations Ambassador Tom Starkey announces an exciting networking event set to take place at Hotel KVL, one of the city’s finest rooftop venues.

On April 25th, from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM, the hotel will host a vibrant evening overlooking the mighty Mekong River and offering breathtaking views of the Royal Palace and gardens. This event marks the last rooftop gathering before the rainy season, making it a must-attend occasion for both new arrivals and long-time expats in Cambodia.

Tom Starkey expressed his enthusiasm about the location: “We are really pleased to be holding the event at one of the best rooftops and rooftop views in Phnom Penh, right on the riverfront, with views of the Royal Palace and gardens as well as where the mighty Mekong meets the Tonle Sap.”

“This is a high-end venue that will be the last rooftop event before the rainy season. Plus, we have some amazing prizes and a live band, so let’s make the most of it,” added Tom, who is also the founder of Cambodia Lifestyle.

The evening promises a fantastic mix of networking, entertainment, and delectable treats. Guests will have the option to enjoy a single drink or indulge in a free-flow package, complete with cocktails and delicious finger foods. At 9:00 PM, the event will culminate in a lucky draw featuring incredible prizes, such as free hotel stays, food vouchers, and exclusive experiences from local businesses. This is an excellent opportunity for attendees to connect with a diverse group of professionals while building valuable relationships.
