Dancing Across Cultures: How DJ Lily Is Changing Phnom Penh’s Soundtrack https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/dj-lily-is-changing-phnom-penhs-soundtrack/ Mon, 05 May 2025 06:33:34 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=16191

Something special happened at our recent InterNations rooftop event at Hotel KVL. As the sun dipped over the Tonle Sap and the cocktails flowed, a wave of energy swept through the crowd, and at the centre of it was DJ Lily. With her signature blend of Latin rhythms, global beats, and infectious charisma, she turned a casual networking night into a celebration of movement, culture, and connection. We knew we had to find out more.

So, we sat down with DJ Lily, Phnom Penh’s rising musical force, to learn how she ended up spinning on Cambodian rooftops, what drives her unique style, and why music can be a bridge between people from all walks of life.

Hey Lily, tell us a bit about yourself — how did you end up behind the decks?

I’m DJ Lily, originally from Latin America, and music has always been a huge part of my life. I became a DJ because I wanted to share joy, energy, and culture — to create moments people remember. I love mixing genres that get people moving, especially reggaeton, salsa, bachata, afrobeats, and international pop. It’s not just about playing songs. I want people to feel something when I play.

How did your Cambodia DJ journey start?

“I’ve been DJing for around 8 years, but I started my project in Cambodia in 2022 when I became the resident DJ at Up by KVL — such a beautiful rooftop and great team. Since then, I’ve played at festivals in Thailand and Malaysia, and collaborated with Cambodian artists. The dream now is to keep growing, keep exploring, and create more events that bring different cultures together through music.”

Indeed, Lily doesn’t just play sets — she curates experiences. Each performance is tailored to the mood, crowd, and venue, and her ability to read a room is one of the reasons she’s getting booked more and more across the region.

What do you love most about DJing here in Cambodia?

When I play music and people start to smile, dance, and let go — that’s everything. There’s something about Cambodia that makes people open to new vibes. I’ve found such a warm, welcoming atmosphere here, and I always try to return that energy. Every set is a chance to connect and celebrate something bigger than just sound.

What makes your sets different from others? Why should someone come see you play or book you?

I bring something you might not find easily in Phnom Penh — a mix of Latin flavor and global energy. I adapt to the space and audience, but the essence is always high-energy, joyful, and inclusive. I don’t just want people to dance; I want them to feel like they’ve travelled somewhere else, even just for a night.

How do you see your music contributing to the local scene?

I think I offer something fresh. Many locals and expats are looking for more cultural variety in the nightlife scene. I try to help diversify what’s out there — collaborating with artists, organising themed nights, and just being part of that growing wave of creative energy. Music is a universal language, and I love using it to create community here.

And finally… what keeps you in Cambodia? What do you love most about living here?

Honestly, the kindness. The people, the energy — there’s a vibe here that feels very real. I came just to explore, but I stayed because I fell in love with the country and the culture. Cambodia gave me the space to grow and express myself, and I’m excited for what’s next.

Fine Wines in Cambodia: Bringing Italian Elegance to the Kingdom https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/fine-wines-in-cambodia/ Sat, 05 Apr 2025 03:25:36 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15453
Fine Wines in Cambodia

A new wave of fine wine appreciation is taking root in Cambodia, and it may surprise you. Once long associated with its French colonial past, a fresh and exciting movement is emerging—one that highlights the diversity and richness of Italian wines. Leading this effort is Luca, an Italian wine connoisseur and brand ambassador for Fantini Wines, who has made it his mission to introduce Cambodians and expatriates alike to the refined world of Italian vintages.

From Fashion to Fermentation: Luca’s Journey to Cambodia

Luca’s journey to Cambodia is as unique as the wines he represents. Having spent 25 years living and working across the UK, US, and Europe—primarily in the fashion industry—he found that the world of wine shares many similarities with luxury fashion, particularly in marketing, storytelling, and cultural prestige.

“I’ve always believed that fashion and wine have a lot in common,” Luca explains. “Both industries revolve around heritage, craftsmanship, and the ability to evoke emotions through quality and experience. Wine tells a story, and I love being the person who shares that story with others.”

His passion for wine led him to work as a winemaker in some of the world’s most renowned wine regions, including Stellenbosch in South Africa, Chianti in Italy, and Mosel in Germany. With his WSET Level 3 certification in wine tasting, Luca arrived in Cambodia ready to share his expertise and help shape the country’s developing wine scene.

Fantini Wines: A Taste of Italy in Cambodia

Through Buonissimo Trading, an Italian import company that has been operating in Cambodia since 2016, Luca now represents Fantini Wines, a distinguished Italian brand committed to quality and tradition. The company’s philosophy is rooted in supporting small, family-run vineyards in southern Italy, combining generational expertise with modern oenological techniques.

“Fantini is not just another wine brand; it’s a company that believes in empowering small producers,” says Luca. “We work with families who have cultivated their vineyards for generations, and we support them with modern technology and expertise. This is what makes our wines special—they have history, character, and soul.”

Creating a Wine Culture in Cambodia

Since arriving in Cambodia, Luca has been actively working to cultivate a deeper appreciation for Italian wines. Over the past few months, he has organized exclusive wine dinners, tasting events, and training sessions for restaurant and hotel staff. He has even hosted masterclasses, including a unique Women’s Day event at a fashion boutique that seamlessly combined wine, design, and community.

“One of my proudest moments was the masterclass for Women’s Day at Curio,” he says. “It was a beautiful blend of culture, where fashion met fine wine, and people got to experience the depth of Italian wine alongside local and regional design at Curio.”

Why Italian Wine?

While many Cambodians associate fine wine with France, Luca believes that Italian wines bring something distinct to the table.

“Italy is the world’s largest wine producer in terms of volume, but the real magic lies in our diversity,” he explains. “Italian wines come from a rich variety of microclimates, grape types, and production techniques. People here in Cambodia are just starting to realize how much Italy has to offer beyond the usual big-name regions.”

Fantini’s team includes 25 young oenologists and agronomists who work with cutting-edge technology to enhance both vineyard management and cellar techniques. This commitment to quality over mass production sets them apart and allows wine lovers in Cambodia to experience the best of Italy’s diverse wine regions.

Enriching Cambodia’s Hospitality and Lifestyle Scene

The impact of Luca’s work goes beyond just introducing new wines; it’s about enriching Cambodia’s growing hospitality sector. By training restaurant and hotel staff, he is helping elevate service standards and knowledge, making high-quality wine experiences more accessible to locals and visitors alike.

“Education is key,” Luca says. “It’s not just about drinking wine; it’s about understanding it, pairing it, and appreciating the craftsmanship behind it. When restaurant teams understand the wines they are serving, it enhances the entire dining experience.”

Additionally, Fantini Wines’ presence in Cambodia diversifies the country’s culinary scene, offering an alternative to traditional French pairings and expanding the range of international flavors available. Through curated wine events and partnerships, Luca is helping to position Cambodia as an emerging destination for fine wine enthusiasts.

A Personal Touch: Why Cambodia?

For Luca, Cambodia is more than just another market—it’s a place he is beginning to call home.

“I’ve only been here for three months, but I already feel a connection to the people,” he shares. “The nature of my job could be the same anywhere in the world, but what makes Cambodia special is its people. Their kindness, their openness—it makes this whole experience more rewarding.”

Where to Find Fantini Wines in Cambodia

While Fantini Wines operates primarily as a wholesaler, private clients can also enjoy their selection through direct orders. With a minimum spend of $50, customers can have premium Italian wines delivered straight to their doorstep, making it easier than ever to experience a taste of Italy in the Kingdom.

Direct delivery is available within Phnom Penh with a minimum spend of $50.

With Cambodia’s wine culture continuing to evolve, Luca and Fantini Wines are poised to play a key role in shaping its future. Whether through intimate tastings, grand wine dinners, or simply a glass shared among friends, Italian wines are finding their place in the Kingdom—one sip at a time.

The Ring Kun Khmer: Preserving and Promoting Cambodia’s Ancient Martial Art https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/the-ring-kun-khmer-preserving-and-promoting-cambodias-ancient-martial-art/ Wed, 19 Mar 2025 08:57:28 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=15069

Kun Khmer, Cambodia’s ancient martial art, is deeply woven into the country’s history and identity. Despite its rich heritage, Kun Khmer has often been overshadowed on the international stage. Enter The Ring Kun Khmer, a modern gym in Phnom Penh that not only trains fighters but also welcomes beginners, tourists, and fitness enthusiasts who want to experience this unique sport. To get a deeper insight into the mission behind The Ring Kun Khmer, Cambodia Lifestyle sat down with co-founder Sov Men, who is also the creator of Khmer Flow, a lifestyle brand dedicated to promoting Kun Khmer worldwide.

Can you introduce yourself and tell us about The Ring Kun Khmer?

My name is Sov Men, and I’m the co-founder of The Ring Kun Khmer, a gym located in the heart of Phnom Penh. I also manage our professional fight team and act as their agent. Additionally, I created Khmer Flow, a lifestyle brand that aims to promote Kun Khmer culture and identity beyond Cambodia’s borders.

When we launched The Ring, our goal was simple: to create a welcoming space where anyone could experience Kun Khmer. Whether you’re a local, an expat, a tourist, or just a fitness enthusiast, this gym is for you. The idea was never to build a gym just for fighters but to make a modern Kun Khmer training center that is open to all.

Over time, we naturally attracted more serious fighters, and I realized how few opportunities there were for them to grow or gain international exposure. That’s when my role evolved—I began managing our fight team, building international connections, and helping our athletes get the recognition they deserve.

On a personal level, this journey has been eye-opening. Being born and raised in France, I grew up unaware that Cambodia even had its own martial art. That realization shocked me. If I didn’t know, how many others were also unaware? That inspired me to create Khmer Flow. It started as a clothing line, but it quickly became a cultural platform that spreads awareness of Kun Khmer worldwide. Our slogan, “We Don’t Play Kun Khmer”, has become a proud statement of what this sport represents—it’s not just a game, it’s our identity.

Today, The Ring remains a gym for everyone. Yes, we train professional fighters, but we also welcome amateurs, beginners, kids, and tourists. It’s a community where people can experience a piece of Cambodia’s heritage, whether their goal is fitness, fun, or mastering Kun Khmer. At the same time, we continue to push the sport globally, step by step.

How long has The Ring been operational, and what are your future plans?

We’ve been running The Ring for almost three years now. What started as a training space quickly grew into something much bigger. As I worked with more fighters, I realized that it wasn’t just about running a gym—it was about creating real opportunities for Kun Khmer athletes, especially those who dream of international exposure but have no clear pathway to achieve it.

That’s when my vision shifted: I want The Ring to be a launchpad for Kun Khmer fighters, helping them grow locally and internationally. With Khmer Flow, I want to take Kun Khmer beyond the ring, giving it a platform in everyday life.

Some of our biggest achievements so far:

  • Watching our community grow and seeing amateur members step into their first interclub fights.
  • Seeing our professional fighters improve daily and now be recognized among the best in Cambodia.
  • Having two of our fighters selected for GMA (Gods of Martial Arts), one of the biggest MMA promotions in Vietnam, with the chance to fight for a belt.
  • The success of our Khmer Flow slogan, “We Don’t Play Kun Khmer”, which has gained international attention.

Looking ahead, I have big plans: Partner with major organizations like Glory Kickboxing, ONE Championship, and Karate Combat. Continue growing Khmer Flow as a cultural brand that carries Kun Khmer’s message worldwide. Expand The Ring—possibly opening new gyms across Cambodia. Make Kun Khmer a recognized part of Cambodia’s sports tourism.

It’s a long road, but we’re already on the way.

What makes The Ring unique, and what do you love most about your work?

What I love most is that The Ring has become a real community. On any given day, you’ll see professional fighters, hobbyists, kids, seniors, locals, and expats all training together. There’s no judgment, no ego—just people pushing themselves and supporting each other.

Our uniqueness comes from this balance: we’re modern and international, yet we deeply respect the roots of Kun Khmer. We work with Kun Khmer legends but also bring in foreign coaches to provide fresh perspectives. This mix creates something truly special.

Beyond just training fighters, Khmer Flow has become the cultural voice of our mission. The designs, slogans, and merchandise all send a message: Kun Khmer is serious, and it belongs on the world stage.

At our core, we stand for respect, hard work, and loyalty. Whether someone trains for fitness, competition, or cultural connection, they receive the same support. The Ring and Khmer Flow are two sides of the same mission—building something meaningful for Kun Khmer, both inside and outside the ring.

Why should people train at The Ring, and how does it benefit the community?

The Ring isn’t just another gym. It’s a unique spot in the heart of Phnom Penh, located in Koh Pich at Aquation Office Park. We’ve partnered with DIB Club, so members don’t just train—they also get access to a beautiful swimming pool for recovery and relaxation. It’s a full experience, not just a workout.

What sets us apart is the mix of serious training and a great environment. Fighters, international athletes, tourists, and hobbyists all train together. It’s not about status, it’s about effort.

On top of that, Khmer Flow turns every supporter into an ambassador for Kun Khmer. People wear our shirts in Europe, the U.S., Myanmar, and beyond. Every time someone puts on a “We Don’t Play Kun Khmer” shirt, they’re carrying our culture with them.

On a bigger scale, The Ring helps young Cambodians—especially those from rural areas—find opportunities they never imagined. Some of our fighters came from tough backgrounds, and today, they’re on TV, fighting abroad, and building careers. That changes their lives and those of their families and communities.

What does Cambodia mean to you, and why have you chosen to build this here?

For me, this is personal. I was born in France, but my roots are here. I didn’t expect to stay this long when I came to Cambodia ten years ago. But the more time I spent here, the more I saw how much potential there was—and how much of our own culture is still under-promoted.

Discovering Kun Khmer was a shock. Growing up in France, I loved martial arts, but I had no idea Cambodia had its own fighting style. That realization made me stay. It felt like my responsibility to help Kun Khmer evolve, modernize, and gain recognition, both here and internationally.

What I love about living in Cambodia is the energy. It’s young, fast-moving, and full of opportunities to build something meaningful. That’s what I’m doing with The Ring Kun Khmer and Khmer Flow—helping write the next chapter for Kun Khmer and making sure it gets the respect it deserves.

Phnom Penh’s most vibrant celebration of female empowerment, Phnom Fem Fest (PFF), returns on March 8, 2025, in honor of International Women’s Day. Held at F3 Futures Factory, this annual festival has become a cultural landmark, championing Cambodian women and their allies through music, art, discussions, and workshops. If you’re in Phnom Penh, this is an event you won’t want to miss!

This year, the festival shifts its focus toward Khmer arts, promising a deeply immersive and locally rooted experience.

A Celebration of Music, Art, and Dialogue

From electrifying live music to thought-provoking discussions, the lineup for Phnom Fem Fest 2025 is stacked with talent. Cambodian singer Sang Sok Serey will debut her new song, Her Voice, a rallying cry for gender equality. “Too many women talk of blame, shame, and silence,” Serey shared. “I want to amplify their voices and challenge outdated mindsets.”

However, the impact of such events goes beyond bilateral relations; they strengthen Cambodia’s reputation as a country that celebrates multiculturalism and values the contributions of international visitors.

Strengthening Global Partnerships Through Tourism

Tourism is one of Cambodia’s most significant economic sectors, with millions of visitors arriving each year from all corners of the world. The Cambodia-China Tourism Year is an opportunity to enhance people-to-people connections, build trade relations, and reinforce diplomatic and economic partnerships beyond just the Chinese market.

With its diverse tourism offerings—from the ancient temples of Angkor Wat to the pristine beaches of Koh Rong, the bustling streets of Phnom Penh, and the cultural heritage of Battambang—Cambodia has long been a magnet for travelers seeking rich experiences. This initiative further cements Cambodia as an open and welcoming hub for all cultures, not just a select few.

The Role of Infrastructure and Hospitality in a Growing Tourism Landscape

With international visitor numbers rising, Cambodia continues to develop infrastructure, hospitality services, and travel conveniences to better cater to tourists. Expanded flight routes, improved transportation, and investments in high-quality accommodations are all part of the strategy to make Cambodia an even more attractive destination for global travelers.

Chey Tech, a socio-economic researcher, emphasized that while attracting Chinese tourists is a key focus, Cambodia’s overall tourism strategy must be built on a foundation of inclusivity. “The Cambodia-China Tourism Year will help boost Chinese tourism, but for sustainable success, the government must also ensure high standards of hospitality and infrastructure that accommodate visitors from a range of cultural backgrounds,” he noted.

A Gateway to Global Engagement

The Cambodia-China Tourism Year 2025 is just one example of Cambodia’s broader vision to position itself as a key player in international tourism. With strategic events that celebrate cultural exchange and inclusivity, Cambodia is strengthening its ties with China while also inviting the world to explore its rich heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality.

As Cambodia continues to open its doors to visitors from every nation, initiatives like these reaffirm its standing as a nation that thrives on diversity, connection, and shared experiences. With the upcoming event in Zhengzhou, the world is once again reminded that Cambodia is not just a destination—it is a global crossroads of culture, history, and future possibilities.

Art in Phnom Penh: Khun Vannak’s Art Invited Exploration of Identity and Memory https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/art-in-phnom-penh-khun-vannaks-art/ Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:11:12 +0000 https://www.cambodialifestyle.com/?p=14687
Art in Phnom Penh: Khun Vannak’s Art

Khun Vannak’s recent solo exhibition presented an immersive collection of self-portraits, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and objects that explored identity, memory, and the interplay between the human spirit and animals.

Vannak transformed the gallery at the German-Cambodian Cultural Centre, or Meta House, into a sanctuary of layered intimacies, a space that was not only inhabited but also played with, felt, and shared.

This immersive creation invited visitors into a labyrinth of simultaneous sensibilities, born from a collaboration with his partner Emmanuel Pezard, art curator Erick Gonzalez, and a collective of artists and performers whose presence had etched the contours of his universe.

In this exhibit, he aimed to show the audience what lay beyond the surface and in the essence of his intimate universe. By inviting the audience into his “home,” he reversed the patterns that had defined his artistic practice over the past decade.

“We were not spectators, but participants who entered, observed, and interpreted. Our gaze, once passive, became an act of exploration, of discovering our own curiosities. Each element raised questions,” he said.

The door to Vannak’s house swung inward, revealing not walls but layers of identity—every mask Vannak had ever worn faded into projections on the gallery’s screens in a retrospective offering a comprehensive view of his visual work.

Vannak explained that there were framed self-portraits, photos, paintings, sculptures, and objects, all with a story behind them. “We were somewhere between a curiosity cabinet and theatrical decorum, a reflection of different realities that together made sense and created unity,” he said.

Through images of his ancestors, Vannak stitched together the fragmented fabric of family memories. These relics were preserved and reimagined, and therefore revived, acting as bridges spanning the distances of time and space, prompting viewers to enter their ongoing narratives.

In reconstructing the shattered emblems of disrupted identities, he rejected the comfort of resolution. Instead, he reveled in their discordant beauty, creating an aesthetic of dissonance.

Vannak interwove irony and sincerity, creating a narrative that softened the weight of a difficult childhood while implying its presence.

Furthermore, it was also a vast embrace, bringing together his companion, his friends, his omnipresent cats, his walks in the city where he had always lived, but also over this country whose wars he was a child of.

“The viewer as kindred spirits, proposing that we inhabited this shared space, not as strangers, but as co-creators of its meaning,” Vannak stated.

Most of the old objects, such as copper pots and pottery, had been given by relatives and friends from Battambang, Kratie, and Kandal provinces. The rest were bought from the market. His wooden sculptures copied ancient carvings on old pieces of wood, Vannak told Kiripost.

“This exhibition was also an installation. The idea was to reconstruct my artistic universe by opening the doors of my home, to show what was behind the walls. There was a retrospective of my 10 years of photographic work, my first series of paintings, which I began during Covid, various installations, and part of my private collection, which showed my attachment to Khmer culture,” he added.

“This ensemble formed part of my identity and allowed viewers to immerse themselves in my work in real time, showing its many facets. The aim was to share and exchange with visitors the visual aspects that made up my world, showing them in an ensemble that didn’t boil down to one art form, but to an approach to the arts in general.”

He said that was why at the opening, there was an artistic performance, with the complicity of Eric Ellul. “Photography, painting, performance, installation, a music concert, this exhibition was a reflection of my identity in the mirror of society,” he said.

Khun Vannak, born in 1980 in Phnom Penh, was a contemporary artist known for his unique blend of photography and performance.

Initially a finance graduate, he turned to art in 2014 and decided to devote himself entirely to it in 2019. His work often explored identity and social commentary through personal narratives, using himself as the subject.

He exhibited widely, notably in the ‘Adorned Body, Transformed Body’ exhibition organized by Musée International du Parfum in Grasse, and through his initiative, ‘Art Home,’ which promoted local artists and cultural exchange.

Vannak’s work had been exhibited in Tokyo, Taipei, Lille, and on numerous occasions in the Cambodian capital, as part of the Photo Phnom Penh Festival, of which he was one of the pillars. His commitment to improving the Cambodian art scene continued to be recognized nationally and was now being exported internationally.
